Competitive advantage: creating and sustaining superior performance

Theorists in various fields have discussed characteristics of top managers. This paper attempts to synthesize these previously fragmented literatures around a more general “upper echelons perspective.” The theory states that organizational outcomes—strategic choices and performance levels—are partially predicted by managerial background characteristics. Propositions and methodological suggestions are included.

Upper Echelons: The Organization as a Reflection of Its Top Managers

The primary purpose of this article is to clarify the nature of the entrepreneurial orientation (EO) construct and to propose a contingency framework for investigating the relationship between EO and firm performance. We first explore and refine the dimensions of EO and discuss the usefulness of viewing a firm's EO as a multidimensional construct. Then, drawing on examples from the EO-related contingencies literature, we suggest alternative models (moderating effects, mediating effects, independent effects, interaction effects) for testing the EO-performance relationship.

Clarifying the Entrepreneurial Orientation Construct and Linking It To Performance

It is argued that (a) social identification is a perception of oneness with a group of persons; (b) social identification stems from the categorization of individuals, the distinctiveness and prestige of the group, the salience of outgroups, and the factors that traditionally are associated with group formation; and (c) social identification leads to activities that are congruent with the identity, support for institutions that embody the identity, stereotypical perceptions of self and others, and outcomes that traditionally are associated with group formation, and it reinforces the antecedents of identification. This perspective is applied to organizational socialization, role conflict, and intergroup relations.

Background To achieve replicative immortality, most cancers develop a telomere maintenance mechanism, such as reactivation of telomerase or alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT). There are limited data on the prevalence and clinical significance of ALT in pediatric brain tumors, and ALT-directed therapy is not available. Methods We performed C-circle analysis (CCA) on 579 pediatric brain tumors that had corresponding tumor/normal whole genome sequencing through the Open Pediatric Brain Tumor Atlas (OpenPBTA). We detected ALT in 6.9% (n=40/579) of these tumors and completed additional validation by ultrabright telomeric foci in situ on a subset of these tumors. We used CCA to validate TelomereHunter for computational prediction of ALT status and focus subsequent analyses on pediatric high-grade glioma (pHGG) Finally, we examined whether ALT is associated with recurrent somatic or germline alterations. Results ALT is common in pHGG (n=24/63, 38.1%), but occurs infrequently in other pediatric brain tumors (<3%). Somatic ATRX mutations occur in 50% of ALT+ pHGG and in 30% of ALT-pHGG. Rare pathogenic germline variants in mismatch repair (MMR) genes are significantly associated with an increased occurrence of ALT. Conclusions: We demonstrate that ATRX is mutated in only a subset of ALT+ pHGG, suggesting other mechanisms of ATRX loss of function or alterations in other genes may be associated with the development of ALT in these patients. We show that germline variants in MMR are associated with development of ALT in patients with pHGG. We demonstrate that many pHGG utilize ALT without a mutation in ATRX, suggesting either loss of function of ATRX via an alternative mechanism or an alternate means of development of ALT. We show that germline variants in MMR genes are significantly associated with ALT in pHGG. Our work adds to the biological understanding of the development of ALT and provides an approach to stratify patients who may benefit from future ALT-directed therapies in this patient population.

Succession in family owned businesses (FOBs) isinvestigated in order to discover a more complete model of what it takes for asuccession to succeed, determine trends, develop consensus findings, and fillgaps in the conceptual and empirical knowledge, and suggest areas for futureresearch. A literature review was conducted of over 40 articles and seven books aboutFOB succession written in the last 30 years. The examination of an incumbent asa predictor of successful succession revealed three major themes: therelationship between incumbent and successor, the incumbent's motivation, andthe incumbent's personality and needs. Several elements that lead to successful succession in FOBs were determinedto be: the characteristics of the successor and incumbent, the nurturing anddevelopment of successor(s), family relationships, the passing of power, sharedvision, succession planning, and the presence of a board of directors withstrong outsiders as members. Other important factors that can be controlledwere overlooked in previous studies, such as ground rules, selection,nurturing, and family councils.
