Journal ArticleDOI
Gut Microbiota–Dependent Trimethylamine N-Oxide Predicts Risk of Cardiovascular Events in Patients With Stroke and Is Related to Proinflammatory Monocytes
Arash Haghikia,Xinmin S. Li,Thomas G. Liman,Nils Bledau,David Schmidt,Friederike Zimmermann,Nicolle Kränkel,Christian Widera,Kristina Sonnenschein,Aiden Haghikia,Karin Weissenborn,Daniela Fraccarollo,Markus M. Heimesaat,Johann Bauersachs,Zeneng Wang,Weifei Zhu,Udo Bavendiek,Stanley L. Hazen,Stanley L. Hazen,Matthias Endres,Ulf Landmesser +20 more
TL;DR: The data support the notion that TMAO-related increase of proinflammatory monocytes may add to elevated cardiovascular risk of patients with increased TMAOs, as well as in mice with depleted gut microbiota.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long noncoding RNA NEAT1 modulates immune cell functions and is suppressed in early onset myocardial infarction patients.
Martina Gast,Bernhard H. Rauch,Arash Haghikia,Shinichi Nakagawa,Jan Haas,Andrea Stroux,David Schmidt,Paul Schumann,Stefan Weiss,Lars Riff Jensen,Adelheid Kratzer,Nicolle Kraenkel,Christian P. Müller,Daniela Börnigen,Tetsuro Hirose,Stefan Blankenberg,Felicitas Escher,Anja A. Kühl,Andreas W. Kuss,Benjamin Meder,Benjamin Meder,Ulf Landmesser,Tanja Zeller,Wolfgang Poller +23 more
TL;DR: The data from NEAT1-/- mice identifyNEAT1 as a novel lncRNA-type immunoregulator affecting monocyte-macrophage functions and T cell differentiation affecting monocytes/receptors, and increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under baseline conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Propionate attenuates atherosclerosis by immune-dependent regulation of intestinal cholesterol metabolism.
Arash Haghikia,Friederike Zimmermann,Paul Schumann,Andrzej Jasina,Johann Roessler,David Schmidt,Philipp Heinze,Johannes Kaisler,Vanasa Nageswaran,Annette Aigner,Uta Ceglarek,Roodline Cineus,Ahmed N. Hegazy,Emiel P. C. van der Vorst,Yvonne Döring,Yvonne Döring,Christopher M. Strauch,Ina Nemet,Valentina Tremaroli,Chinmay Kumar Dwibedi,Nicolle Kränkel,David M. Leistner,Markus M. Heimesaat,Stefan Bereswill,Geraldine Rauch,Ute Seeland,Ute Seeland,Oliver Soehnlein,Dominik N. Müller,Ralf Gold,Fredrik Bäckhed,Fredrik Bäckhed,Fredrik Bäckhed,Stanley L. Hazen,Stanley L. Hazen,Aiden Haghikia,Ulf Landmesser +36 more
TL;DR: In this article, Gut immunomodulatory effects of the microbiota-derived metabolite propionic acid (PA) on intestinal cholesterol metabolism were examined for the first time, which revealed a novel immune-mediated pathway linking the gut microbiota derived metabolite PA with intestinal Npc1l1 expression and cholesterol homeostasis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Impact of the Gut Microbiota on Atorvastatin Mediated Effects on Blood Lipids
Friederike Zimmermann,Johann Roessler,David Schmidt,Andrzej Jasina,Paul Schumann,Martina Gast,Wolfgang Poller,David M. Leistner,H. Giral,Nicolle Kränkel,Adelheid Kratzer,Sven Schuchardt,Markus M. Heimesaat,Ulf Landmesser,Arash Haghikia +14 more
TL;DR: These results provide novel insights into potential microbiota-dependent mechanisms of lipid regulation by statins, which may account for variable response to statin treatment and demonstrate a crucial role of the gut microbiome for atorvastatin-related effects on blood lipids.
Journal ArticleDOI
