Avian Influenza (H5N1) Viruses Isolated from Humans in Asia in 2004 Exhibit Increased Virulence in Mammals
Taronna R. Maines,Xui Hua Lu,Steven M. Erb,Lindsay Edwards,Jeannette Guarner,Patricia W. Greer,Doan C. Nguyen,Kristy J. Szretter,Li-Mei Chen,Pranee Thawatsupha,Malinee Chittaganpitch,Sunthareeya Waicharoen,Diep T. Nguyen,Tung Nguyen,Hanh T. Nguyen,Jae Hong Kim,Long T. Hoang,Chun Kang,Lien S. Phuong,Wilina Lim,Sherif R. Zaki,Ruben O. Donis,Nancy J. Cox,Jacqueline M. Katz,Terrence M. Tumpey +24 more
TL;DR: The results demonstrate the general equivalence of mouse and ferret models for assessment of the virulence of 2003 and 2004 H5N1 viruses, however, the apparent enhancement ofvirulence of these viruses in humans in 2004 was better reflected in the ferret.
Journal ArticleDOI
Protection of mice and poultry from lethal H5N1 avian influenza virus through adenovirus-based immunization
Wentao Gao,Adam C. Soloff,Xiuhua Lu,Angela Montecalvo,Doan C. Nguyen,Yumi Matsuoka,Paul D. Robbins,David E. Swayne,Ruben O. Donis,Jacqueline M. Katz,Simon M. Barratt-Boyes,Andrea Gambotto +11 more
TL;DR: The development and testing of an adenovirus-based influenza A virus vaccine directed against the hemagglutinin (HA) protein of the A/Vietnam/1203/2004 (H5N1) (VN/ 1203/04) strain isolated during the lethal human outbreak in Vietnam from 2003 to 2005 indicate that the rapid production and subsequent administration of recombinant adenova-based vaccines to both birds and high-risk individuals in the face of an
Journal ArticleDOI
Isolation and Characterization of Avian Influenza Viruses, Including Highly Pathogenic H5N1, from Poultry in Live Bird Markets in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 2001
Doan C. Nguyen,Timothy M. Uyeki,Samadhan Jadhao,Taronna R. Maines,Michael W. Shaw,Yumiko Matsuoka,Catherine B. Smith,Thomas Rowe,Xiuhua Lu,Henrietta Hall,Xiyan Xu,Amanda Balish,Alexander Klimov,Terrence M. Tumpey,David E. Swayne,Lien P. T. Huynh,Ha K. Nghiem,Hanh T. Nguyen,Long T. Hoang,Nancy J. Cox,Jacqueline M. Katz +20 more
TL;DR: It is established that HP H5N1 viruses with properties similar to viruses isolated in Hong Kong and mainland China circulated in Vietnam as early as 2001, suggest a common source for H5n1 viruses circulating in these Asian countries, and provide a framework to better understand the recent widespread emergence of HP H3N2 viruses in Asia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cross-protective immunity in mice induced by live-attenuated or inactivated vaccines against highly pathogenic influenza A (H5N1) viruses.
Xiuhua Lu,Lindsay Edwards,Julia Desheva,Doan C. Nguyen,Rekstin Ar,Iain Stephenson,Kristy J. Szretter,Nancy J. Cox,Larisa Rudenko,Alexander Klimov,Jacqueline M. Katz +10 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that vaccination of mice with H5 IIV or LAIV induced a high degree of cross-protection from illness and death following lethal challenges with a heterologous H5N1 virus.
Journal ArticleDOI
Seroprevalence of Antibodies to Avian Influenza A (H5) and A (H9) Viruses among Market Poultry Workers, Hanoi, Vietnam, 2001
Timothy M. Uyeki,Doan C. Nguyen,Thomas Rowe,Xiuhua Lu,Jean Hu-Primmer,Lien P. Huynh,Nguyen L. K. Hang,Jacqueline M. Katz +7 more
TL;DR: Seroprevalence of H5 and H9 antibodies was low among Hanoi market poultry workers in 2001, but can serve as a baseline for additional studies.
