Journal ArticleDOI
Asthma: the importance of epithelial mesenchymal communication in pathogenesis. Inflammation and the airway epithelium in asthma.
TL;DR: In this paper, an alternative hypothesis is put forward in which atopy/airway inflammation and altered structure and function of the formed airway elements are parallel but interacting factors, for asthma to develop as a chronic disease, genetic and environmental factors that drive each of these components are required.
Journal ArticleDOI
Role of tumor necrosis factor alpha in asthma
TL;DR: The role of T NF-alpha in asthma and the effects of blocking TNF-alpha as a possible therapeutic option in patients with severe corticosteroid-dependent asthma are examined.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long Term Culture of the A549 Cancer Cell Line Promotes Multilamellar Body Formation and Differentiation towards an Alveolar Type II Pneumocyte Phenotype.
James Ross Cooper,James Ross Cooper,Muhammad Bilal Abdullatif,Edward C. Burnett,Karen E. Kempsell,Franco Conforti,Howard Tolley,Jane E. Collins,Donna E. Davies,Donna E. Davies +9 more
TL;DR: This work defines a set of conditions for promoting ATII differentiation characteristics in A549 cells that may be advantageous for studies with this cell line.
Journal ArticleDOI
The role of MAP kinases in intracellular signal transduction in bronchial epithelium.
TL;DR: The bronchial epithelium is exposed to numerous environmental stimuli which can activate intracellular signalling cascades, leading to altered gene expression and to a wide range of responses e.g. cytokine expression, proliferation and apoptosis, likely to be central to the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) family of protein kinases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Leukocyte recruitment after local endobronchial allergen challenge in asthma. Relationship to procedure and to airway interleukin-8 release.
Luis M. Teran,Mary P. Carroll,Anthony J. Frew,Anthony E. Redington,Donna E. Davies,Ivan J. Lindley,Peter H. Howarth,Martin K. Church,Stephen T. Holgate +8 more
TL;DR: Neutrophil infiltration is a nonspecific response to the procedure of bronchoscopy and lavage, in contrast to eosinophil recruitment, which is an allergen-specific phenomenon, and it suggests that IL-8 release may be involved in neutrophil recruitment.
