TL;DR: Estrogen alone or in combination with a progestin improves lipoproteins and lowers fibrinogen levels without detectable effects on postchallenge insulin or blood pressure and in women with a uterus, CEE with cyclic MP has the most favorable effect on HDL-C and no excess risk of endometrial hyperplasia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cardiovascular Disease Outcomes During 6.8 Years of Hormone Therapy: Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study Follow-up (HERS II)
Stephen B. Hulley,Curt D. Furberg,Elizabeth Barrett-Connor,Jane A. Cauley,Deborah Grady,William L. Haskell,Robert H. Knopp,Maureen Lowery,Suzanne Satterfield,Helmut G. Schrott,Eric Vittinghoff,Donald B. Hunninghake +11 more
TL;DR: Lower rates of CHD events among women in the hormone group in the final years of HERS did not persist during additional years of follow-up, and hormone therapy did not reduce risk of cardiovascular events in women with CHD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification and fracture outcomes of undiagnosed low bone mineral density in postmenopausal women: Results from the National Osteoporosis Risk assessment
Ethel S. Siris,Paul D. Miller,Elizabeth Barrett-Connor,Kenneth G. Faulkner,Lois E. Wehren,Thomas A. Abbott,Marc L. Berger,Arthur C. Santora,Louis M. Sherwood +8 more
TL;DR: Age, personal or family history of fracture, Asian or Hispanic heritage, smoking, and cortisone use were associated with significantly increased likelihood of osteoporosis; higher body mass index, African American heritage, estrogen or diuretic use, exercise, and alcohol consumption significantly decreased the likelihood.
Journal ArticleDOI
Glycemic effects of postmenopausal hormone therapy: the Heart and Estrogen/progestin Replacement Study. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
Alka M. Kanaya,David M. Herrington,Eric Vittinghoff,Feng Lin,Deborah Grady,Vera Bittner,Jane A. Cauley,Elizabeth Barrett-Connor +7 more
TL;DR: The effect of hormone therapy on fasting glucose levels and incident diabetes over 4 years of follow-up was evaluated and recommended that for every 30 women treated for 4 years, therapy might prevent one case of diabetes.
Journal ArticleDOI
