Journal ArticleDOI
Prospective Genomic Characterization of the German Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O104:H4 Outbreak by Rapid Next Generation Sequencing Technology
Alexander Mellmann,Dag Harmsen,Craig Cummings,Emily B. Zentz,Shana R. Leopold,Alain Rico,Karola Prior,Rafael Szczepanowski,Yongmei Ji,Wenlan Zhang,Stephen F. McLaughlin,John K. Henkhaus,Benjamin Leopold,Martina Bielaszewska,Rita Prager,Pius Brzoska,Richard Moore,Simone Guenther,Jonathan M. Rothberg,Helge Karch +19 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that by stepwise gain and loss of chromosomal and plasmid-encoded virulence factors, a highly pathogenic hybrid of EAEC and EHEC emerged as the current outbreak clone.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reclassification of Wolbachia persica as Francisella persica comb. nov. and emended description of the family Francisellaceae.
Marilynn A. Larson,Ufuk Nalbantoglu,Khalid Sayood,Emily B. Zentz,Regina Z. Cer,Peter C. Iwen,Stephen C. Francesconi,Kimberly A. Bishop-Lilly,Vishwesh P. Mokashi,Anders Sjöstedt,Steven H. Hinrichs +10 more
TL;DR: Results demonstrate that Wolbachia persica should be reclassified in the genus Francisella as Francisella persica comb, which is supported by data generated from genomic comparisons of W. persica ATCC VR-331T to other near neighbours.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparative Whole-Genome Mapping To Determine Staphylococcus aureus Genome Size, Virulence Motifs, and Clonality
Sanjay K. Shukla,Madhulatha Pantrangi,Buffy Stahl,Adam Briska,Mary E. Stemper,Trevor K. Wagner,Emily B. Zentz,Steven M. Callister,Steven D. Lovrich,John K. Henkhaus,Colin W. Dykes +10 more
TL;DR: Results showed that WGMs could be used not only to genotype S. aureus but also to identify genetic motifs in MRSA that may predict virulence, including small and large insertions and deletions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Use of optical mapping to sort uropathogenic Escherichia coli strains into distinct subgroups
William R. Schwan,Adam Briska,Buffy Stahl,Trevor K. Wagner,Emily B. Zentz,John K. Henkhaus,Steven D. Lovrich,William A. Agger,Steven M. Callister,B. K. Duchateau,Colin W. Dykes +10 more
TL;DR: This optical mapping procedure holds promise as an alternative way to subgroup all E. coli strains, including those involved in infections outside of the intestinal tract and epidemic strains with distinct patterns of antibiotic resistance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessment of Whole-Genome Mapping in a Well-Defined Outbreak of Salmonella enterica Serotype Saintpaul
Paul D. Fey,Peter C. Iwen,Emily B. Zentz,Adam Briska,John K. Henkhaus,Kendall A. Bryant,Marilynn A. Larson,Rhonda K. Noel,Steven H. Hinrichs +8 more
TL;DR: Whole-genome mapping is a viable alternative tool for the epidemiological analysis of Salmonella food-borne disease investigations and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis was concordant with 22 of 23 isolates.
