Plant organic matter inputs exert a strong control on soil organic matter decomposition in a thawing permafrost peatland.
Rachel M. Wilson,Moira Hough,B. A. Verbeke,S. B. Hodgkins,Jeffrey P. Chanton,Scott D. Saleska,Virginia I. Rich,Malak M. Tfaily,Gene W. Tyson,Matthew B. Sullivan,Eoin L. Brodie,William J. Riley,Ben J. Woodcroft,C. K. McCalley,Sky Dominguez,Patrick M. Crill,Ruth K. Varner,Steve Frolking,William J. Cooper +18 more
TL;DR: In this article , the authors compared Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy measurements of solid phase functionalities in plants and SOM to ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometric analyses of plant and SOM water extracts across a palsa-bog-fen thaw and moisture gradient in an Arctic peatland.

Physiological adaptations of leaf litter microbial communities to long-term drought
Ashish A. Malik,Tami L. Swenson,Claudia Weihe,Eric W. Morrison,Jennifer B. H. Martiny,Eoin L. Brodie,Eoin L. Brodie,Trent R. Northen,Steven D. Allison +8 more
TL;DR: The results show a clear functional response to drought in grass litter communities with greater allocation to survival relative to growth that could affect decomposition under drought, and suggest, for the first time in a field setting, a trade-off between microbial drought stress tolerance, resource acquisition and growth traits in leaf litter microbial communities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sample Identifiers and Metadata to Support Data Management and Reuse in Multidisciplinary Ecosystem Sciences
J. Damerow,Charuleka Varadharajan,Kristin Boye,Eoin L. Brodie,Madison Burrus,K. Dana Chadwick,Robert Crystal-Ornelas,H. Elbashandy,Ricardo J. Eloy Alves,Kim S. Ely,Amy E. Goldman,Ted Haberman,Valerie Hendrix,Zarine Kakalia,Kenneth M. Kemner,Annie B. Kersting,Nancy Merino,F. O'Brien,Zach Perzan,E. Robles,P. Sorensen,James C. Stegen,Ramona Walls,Pamela Weisenhorn,Mavrik Zavarin,Deb Agarwal +25 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide a practical approach to sample management, geared towards ecosystem scientists who contribute and reuse sample data and make recommendations for assigning identifiers and metadata that support sample tracking, integration, and reuse.
Journal ArticleDOI
A comparison of lodgepole and spruce needle chemistry impacts on terrestrial biogeochemical processes during isolated decomposition.
Laura T Leonard,Kristin M. Mikkelson,Zhao Hao,Eoin L. Brodie,Kenneth H. Williams,Kenneth H. Williams,Jonathan O. Sharp,Jonathan O. Sharp +7 more
TL;DR: The isolated decomposition of spruce and lodgepole conifer needles is investigated to enhance understanding of how needle litter impacts near-surface terrestrial biogeochemical processes and reveals that the inherent chemistry associated with tree species has a greater impact on soilBiogeochemical signatures during isolated needle decomposition.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: The IsoGenieDB is a public and private data infrastructure designed to store and query data generated by the Iso Genie Project, a ~10 year DOE-funded project focused on discovering ecosystem climate feedbacks in a thawing permafrost landscape, and is being expanded to cover the NASA-funded A2A project.
