The IFITM Proteins Mediate Cellular Resistance to Influenza A H1N1 Virus, West Nile Virus, and Dengue Virus
Abraham L. Brass,Abraham L. Brass,Abraham L. Brass,I-Chueh Huang,Yair Benita,Sinu P. John,Manoj N. Krishnan,Eric M. Feeley,Bethany J. Ryan,Jessica L. Weyer,Louise van der Weyden,Erol Fikrig,David J. Adams,Ramnik J. Xavier,Michael Farzan,Stephen J. Elledge +15 more
TL;DR: It is discovered that the interferon-inducible transmembrane proteins IFITM1, 2, and 3 restrict an early step in influenza A viral replication.
Journal ArticleDOI
Toll-like receptor 3 mediates West Nile virus entry into the brain causing lethal encephalitis
Tian Wang,Terrence Town,Lena Alexopoulou,Lena Alexopoulou,John F. Anderson,Erol Fikrig,Richard A. Flavell +6 more
TL;DR: Tlr3-deficient mice were more resistant to lethal WNV infection and had impaired cytokine production and enhanced viral load in the periphery, whereas in the brain, viral load, inflammatory responses and neuropathology were reduced compared to wild-type mice.
Journal ArticleDOI
Interleukin (il)-6 directs the differentiation of il-4-producing cd4+ t cells
TL;DR: It is shown that IL-6, probably secreted by antigen-presenting cells, is able to polarize naive CD4+ T cells to effector Th2 cells by inducing the initial production of IL-4 in CD4+, a key factor in determining the nature of the immune response.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vaccination against Lyme Disease with Recombinant Borrelia burgdorferi Outer-Surface Lipoprotein A with Adjuvant
Allen C. Steere,Vijay K. Sikand,François Meurice,Dennis Parenti,Erol Fikrig,Robert T. Schoen,John Nowakowski,Christopher H. Schmid,Sabine Laukamp,Charles Buscarino,David S. Krause +10 more
TL;DR: Three injections of vaccine prevented most definite cases of Lyme disease or asymptomatic B. burgdorferi infection in 10,936 subjects in areas of the United States in which Lyme disease is endemic.
Journal ArticleDOI
RNA interference screen for human genes associated with West Nile virus infection.
Manoj N. Krishnan,Aylwin Ng,Bindu Sukumaran,Felicia D. Gilfoy,Pradeep D. Uchil,Hameeda Sultana,Abraham L. Brass,Rachel Adametz,Melody Tsui,Feng Qian,Ruth R. Montgomery,Sima Lev,Peter W. Mason,Raymond A. Koski,Stephen J. Elledge,Stephen J. Elledge,Ramnik J. Xavier,Hervé Agaisse,Erol Fikrig +18 more
TL;DR: This study provides a comprehensive molecular portrait of WNV–human cell interactions that forms a model for understanding single plus-stranded RNA virus infection, and reveals potential antiviral targets.
