TL;DR: Although newer diagnostic techniques are being applied, at this time aortography remains the diagnostic standard; bypass techniques, which provide distal aortic perfusion, produced significantly lower paraplegia rates than the clamp and sew approach.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diaspirin Cross-Linked Hemoglobin (DCLHb) in the Treatment of Severe Traumatic Hemorrhagic Shock: A Randomized Controlled Efficacy Trial
Edward P. Sloan,Max Koenigsberg,David R. Gens,Mark D. Cipolle,Jeffrey W. Runge,Mary Nan Mallory,George H. Rodman +6 more
TL;DR: Although further analysis should investigate whether the mortality difference was solely due to a direct treatment effect or to other factors, DCLHb does not appear to be an effective resuscitation fluid.
Journal ArticleDOI
Human polymerized hemoglobin for the treatment of hemorrhagic shock when blood is unavailable: the USA multicenter trial.
Ernest E. Moore,Frederick A. Moore,Timothy C. Fabian,Andrew C. Bernard,Gerard J. Fulda,David B. Hoyt,Therese M. Duane,Leonard J. Weireter,Gerardo Gomez,Mark D. Cipolle,George H. Rodman,Mark A. Malangoni,George A. Hides,Laurel Omert,Steven A. Gould +14 more
TL;DR: Patients resuscitated with PolyHeme, without stored blood for up to 6 U in 12 hours postinjury, had outcomes comparable with those for the standard of care, and the benefit-to-risk ratio of Polyheme is favorable when blood is needed but not available.
Journal ArticleDOI
Guidelines for the diagnosis and management of blunt aortic injury: an EAST Practice Management Guidelines Work Group.
Kimberly K. Nagy,Timothy C. Fabian,George H. Rodman,Gerard J. Fulda,Aurelio Rodriguez,Stuart E. Mirvis +5 more
TL;DR: In summary, BAI is a lethal result of severe blunt trauma and should be considered in all patients who sustained injury by a deceleration or acceleration mechanism, especially in the face of physical or radiographic findings suggestive of mediastinal injury.
Journal ArticleDOI
Surgical cricothyroidotomy in trauma patients: analysis of its use by paramedics in the field.
Lewis E. Jacobson,Gerardo A. Gomez,Richard J. Sobieray,George H. Rodman,Kathleen C. Solotkin,Maureen Misinski +5 more
TL;DR: Surgical cricothyroidotomy can be performed on the critically injured patient in the field by ambulance paramedics with a high success rate and a low complication rate, and should be included in airway protocols for well-trained, ambulance Advanced Life Support paramedics.
