Journal ArticleDOI
Human gut microbiome viewed across age and geography
Tanya Yatsunenko,Federico E. Rey,Mark J. Manary,Mark J. Manary,Indi Trehan,Indi Trehan,Maria Gloria Dominguez-Bello,Monica Contreras,Magda Magris,Glida Hidalgo,Robert N. Baldassano,Andrey P. Anokhin,Andrew C. Heath,Barbara B. Warner,Jens Reeder,Justin Kuczynski,J. Gregory Caporaso,Catherine A. Lozupone,Christian L. Lauber,Jose C. Clemente,Dan Knights,Rob Knight,Jeffrey I. Gordon +22 more
TL;DR: The need to consider the microbiome when evaluating human development, nutritional needs, physiological variations and the impact of westernization is underscored, as distinctive features of the functional maturation of the gut microbiome are evident in early infancy as well as adulthood.
Journal ArticleDOI
Delivery mode shapes the acquisition and structure of the initial microbiota across multiple body habitats in newborns
Maria Gloria Dominguez-Bello,Elizabeth K. Costello,Elizabeth K. Costello,Monica Contreras,Magda Magris,Glida Hidalgo,Noah Fierer,Rob Knight +7 more
TL;DR: It is found that in direct contrast to the highly differentiated communities of their mothers, neonates harbored bacterial communities that were undifferentiated across multiple body habitats, regardless of delivery mode.
Journal ArticleDOI
The microbiome of uncontacted Amerindians
Jose C. Clemente,Erica C. Pehrsson,Martin J. Blaser,Martin J. Blaser,Kuldip Sandhu,Zhan Gao,Bin Wang,Magda Magris,Glida Hidalgo,Monica Contreras,Oscar Noya-Alarcon,Orlana Lander,Jeremy McDonald,Michael J. Cox,Jens Walter,Phaik Lyn Oh,Jean F. Ruiz,Selena Rodriguez,Nan Shen,Se Jin Song,Jessica L. Metcalf,Rob Knight,Rob Knight,Gautam Dantas,M. Gloria Dominguez-Bello,M. Gloria Dominguez-Bello,M. Gloria Dominguez-Bello +26 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that westernization significantly affects human microbiome diversity and that functional AR genes appear to be a feature of the human microbiome even in the absence of exposure to commercial antibiotics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Distinct cutaneous bacterial assemblages in a sampling of South American Amerindians and US residents
Martin J. Blaser,Maria Gloria Dominguez-Bello,Monica Contreras,Magda Magris,Glida Hidalgo,Isidoro Estrada,Zhan Gao,Jose C. Clemente,Elizabeth K. Costello,Rob Knight,Rob Knight +10 more
TL;DR: Evidence is provided that ethnicity, lifestyle and/or geography are associated with the structure of human cutaneous bacterial communities, including Proteobacteria and Firmicutes, in Amerindians in the Venezuelan Amazon.
Journal ArticleDOI
The bacterial microbiota in the oral mucosa of rural Amerindians
Monica Contreras,Elizabeth K. Costello,Glida Hidalgo,Magda Magris,Rob Knight,Rob Knight,Maria Gloria Dominguez-Bello +6 more
TL;DR: Preserving buccal swabs in the Aware Messenger oral fluid collection device substantially altered the bacterial composition in comparison to freezing, and therefore this method cannot be used to preserve samples for the study of microbial communities.
