This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Flood management systems involve a variety of complexities, such as multiple uncertainties and their interdependences, as well as multiregion and dynamic features. This paper thus presents an inexact two-stage mixed-integer programming with random coefficients (ITMP-RC) model for flood management in a dynamic and uncertain environment. ITMP-RC is capable of addressing dual uncertainties expressed as random boundary intervals that exist in the coefficients of the objective function. A case study of flood diversion planning is used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed methodology. Results indicate that total system costs would be rising gradually with increased probabilities of occurrence, implying a trade-off between economic objective and system safety. A variety of decision alternatives can be obtained under different policy scenarios, which are useful for decision makers to formulate appropriate flood management policies according to practical situations. Inexact Probabilistic Optimization Model and Its Application to Flood Diversion Planning in a Dynamic and Uncertain Environment

This paper proposed a newly explored composite photocatalyst, Chitin/ZnO, prepared via the sol-gel method for exploring its photocatalytic activity in the simulated aquaculture wastewater under UV irradiation. The study mainly involves the application of Chitin/ZnO from three aspects: the structure, the principle and the degradation efficiency. The effects of purification operation factors including mass ratio rate, dosage, calcination temperature, initial NH4+–N concentration and illumination conditions on the NH4+–N removal effectiveness were investigated. Optimum conditions were explored through orthogonal experiments, which revealed that 88.73% NH4+–N removal from 60 mg/L synthetic wastewater was achieved by direct illumination for 120 min. Additionally, Chitin/ZnO photocatalysts (mass ratio of 2:3) at a calcination temperature of 500 °C were favorable for Chitin loaded over a ZnO lattice. The obtained nanoparticles of Chitin/ZnO were characterized using SEM and X-ray diffraction. The purpose of this paper is to grope for an economical and easy method of Chitin/ZnO powder preparation and to provide a practical approach for future research on the photocatalytic purification of aquaculture wastewater.

Treatment of Aquaculture Wastewater through Chitin/ZnO Composite Photocatalyst

As one of the most pressing issues in the world, climate change has brought significant impacts on natural and human systems, where drought events are likely to be frequent and severe under climate change impact. In this study, a multi-GCMs Bayesian copula (MGBC) method is developed for assessing the impact of climate change on drought risk, through integrating multi-GCMs, Bayesian, and copula function into a general framework. MGBC can tackle uncertainties existing in copula parameters and global climate models (GCMs), as well as provide ensemble projections for drought risk. MGBC is applied to the Aral Sea basin for assessing multivariate drought risk (i.e., duration-severity, duration-peak, and severity-peak) during 1901–2017 and 2021–2050, where climate data are derived from multi-GCMs (CMCC-CM, GFDL-CM3, MRI-CGCM3) under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. Some major findings can be summarized: (1) in the historical period (1901–2017), the basin suffered 119 drought events, where drought risks of middle and lower reaches are higher than that in the upstream; (2) in the future (2021–2050), the basin’s drought risk level will increase (1.5%∼8.6%), particularly for middle and lower reaches due to climate change impact; (3) as the impacts of climate change intensify, drought risk would increase (i.e., RCP8.5 > RCP4.5), and drought events in association with high-risk level would move from the basin’s south to north; (4) the main factors that bring the drought risk are meteorological condition (e.g., precipitation and evapotranspiration) and human activity (e.g., soil moisture and texture). The findings suggest that droughts in the Aral Sea basin are affected significantly by climatic factors and drought risk would intensify with climate change.
