Journal ArticleDOI
Metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analysis of saliva reveals disease-associated microbiota in patients with periodontitis and dental caries
Daniel Belstrøm,Florentin Constancias,Yang Liu,Liang Yang,Daniela I. Drautz-Moses,Stephan C. Schuster,Gurjeet S. Kohli,Tim Holm Jakobsen,Palle Holmstrup,Michael Givskov,Michael Givskov +10 more
TL;DR: It is shown that relative abundance of specific oral bacterial species and bacterial gene expression in saliva associates with periodontitis and dental caries, and the possibility of testing bacterial gene activity in saliva to identify oral diseases before they become clinically evident is investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evolutionary distinctiveness of fatty acid and polyketide synthesis in eukaryotes
TL;DR: A vast potential for the production of bioactive polyketide compounds in some lineages of microbial eukaryotes is demonstrated, indicating that the evolution of these compounds may have played an important role in their ecological success.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biosynthesis of toxic naturally-occurring seafood contaminants
TL;DR: The highly unusual and complex structures of most common seafood toxins have made them interesting targets for biosynthetic studies and these are presented in the context of polyketide, non-ribosomal peptide, and hybrid pathway derived, toxin assembly.
Journal ArticleDOI
High abundance of the potentially maitotoxic dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus carpenteri in temperate waters of New South Wales, Australia.
Gurjeet S. Kohli,Gurjeet S. Kohli,Shauna A. Murray,Brett A. Neilan,Lesley Rhodes,D. Tim Harwood,Kirsty F. Smith,Lauren Meyer,Angela Capper,Steve Brett,Gustaaf M. Hallegraeff +10 more
TL;DR: The seasonal abundance (April–May 2012/13) of Gambierdiscus spp.
Journal ArticleDOI
An aerobic eukaryotic parasite with functional mitochondria that likely lacks a mitochondrial genome
Uwe John,Uwe John,Yameng Lu,Yameng Lu,Sylke Wohlrab,Sylke Wohlrab,Marco Groth,Jan Janouškovec,Gurjeet S. Kohli,Gurjeet S. Kohli,Felix Christopher Mark,Ulf Bickmeyer,Sarah Farhat,Marius Felder,Stephan Frickenhaus,Laure Guillou,Laure Guillou,Patrick J. Keeling,Ahmed A. Moustafa,Betina M. Porcel,Klaus-Ulrich Valentin,Gernot Glöckner +21 more
TL;DR: The genome of Amoebophrya ceratii was sequenced to investigate the early evolution of genomic characters in dinoflagellates and found no evidence for the presence of a mitochondrial genome.
