Journal ArticleDOI
Quasi-monoenergetic laser-plasma acceleration of electrons to 2 GeV
Xiaoming Wang,Rafal Zgadzaj,N. Fazel,Zhengyan Li,S. A. Yi,Xi Zhang,W. Henderson,Y. Y. Chang,R. Korzekwa,Hai-En Tsai,Chih-Hao Pai,Hernan Quevedo,Gilliss Dyer,Erhard Gaul,Mikael Martinez,Aaron C Bernstein,T. Borger,M. Spinks,Michael E Donovan,V. Khudik,Gennady Shvets,Todd Ditmire,Michael W Downer +22 more
TL;DR: Simulations indicate that with improvements in the laser-pulse focus quality, acceleration to nearly 10 GeV should be possible with the available pulse energy, and the principal physical barriers to multi-gigaelectronvolt acceleration are overcome.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of microstructure and composition on spall fracture in aluminum
Nicholas A. Pedrazas,Daniel L. Worthington,D. Allen Dalton,D. Allen Dalton,Paul A. Sherek,Paul A. Sherek,Sean P. Steuck,Sean P. Steuck,Hernan Quevedo,Aaron C Bernstein,Eric M. Taleff,Todd Ditmire +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured spall strength as a function of composition and microstructure in three Al materials: a high-purity Al (Al HP), a commercial-pure Al (AA1100) and an alloy of Al containing 3.5% Mg (Al 3Mg).
Journal ArticleDOI
Measurement of the plasma astrophysical S factor for the He3(d,p)He4 reaction in exploding molecular clusters
M. Barbui,W. Bang,Aldo Bonasera,K. Hagel,K. Schmidt,J. B. Natowitz,R. Burch,G. Giuliani,M. Barbarino,Hua Zheng,Gilliss Dyer,Hernan Quevedo,Erhard Gaul,Aaron C Bernstein,Michael E Donovan,Sachie Kimura,M. Mazzocco,Fabrizio Consoli,R. De Angelis,P. Andreoli,Todd Ditmire +20 more
TL;DR: The plasma astrophysical S factor for the 3He(d,p)4He fusion reaction was measured for the first time at temperatures of few keV, using the interaction of intense ultrafast laser pulses with molecular deuterium clusters mixed with 3He atoms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Temperature measurements of fusion plasmas produced by Petawatt-laser- irradiated D2-He3 or CD4-He3 clustering gases
W. Bang,M. Barbui,Aldo Bonasera,Gilliss Dyer,Hernan Quevedo,K. Hagel,K. Schmidt,Fabrizio Consoli,R. De Angelis,P. Andreoli,Erhard Gaul,Aaron C Bernstein,Michael E Donovan,M. Barbarino,Sachie Kimura,M. Mazzocco,J. Sura,J. B. Natowitz,Todd Ditmire +18 more
TL;DR: The temperatures determined by these two methods agree well, which indicates that (i) the ion energy distribution is not significantly distorted when ions travel in the disassembling plasma; and (ii) the kinetic energy of deuterium ions, especially the "hottest part" responsible for nuclear fusion, is well described by a near-Maxwellian distribution.
Journal ArticleDOI
Optimization of the neutron yield in fusion plasmas produced by Coulomb explosions of deuterium clusters irradiated by a petawatt laser.
W. Bang,Gilliss Dyer,Hernan Quevedo,Aaron C Bernstein,Erhard Gaul,Michael E Donovan,Todd Ditmire +6 more
TL;DR: The kinetic energy of hot ions from the laser-driven Coulomb explosion of deuterium clusters and the resulting fusion yield in plasmas formed from these exploding clusters has been investigated under a variety of conditions using the Texas Petawatt laser.
