Journal ArticleDOI
Quasi-monoenergetic laser-plasma acceleration of electrons to 2 GeV
Xiaoming Wang,Rafal Zgadzaj,N. Fazel,Zhengyan Li,S. A. Yi,Xi Zhang,W. Henderson,Y. Y. Chang,R. Korzekwa,Hai-En Tsai,Chih-Hao Pai,Hernan Quevedo,Gilliss Dyer,Erhard Gaul,Mikael Martinez,Aaron C Bernstein,T. Borger,M. Spinks,Michael E Donovan,V. Khudik,Gennady Shvets,Todd Ditmire,Michael W Downer +22 more
TL;DR: Simulations indicate that with improvements in the laser-pulse focus quality, acceleration to nearly 10 GeV should be possible with the available pulse energy, and the principal physical barriers to multi-gigaelectronvolt acceleration are overcome.
Journal ArticleDOI
Demonstration of a 1.1 petawatt laser based on a hybrid optical parametric chirped pulse amplification/mixed Nd:glass amplifier
Erhard Gaul,Mikael Martinez,Joel Blakeney,A. Jochmann,Martin Ringuette,Doug Hammond,Ted Borger,Ramiro Escamilla,Skylar Douglas,W. Henderson,Gilliss Dyer,Alvin C. Erlandson,R.R. Cross,John A. Caird,Christopher A. Ebbers,Todd Ditmire +15 more
TL;DR: The design and performance of the Texas Petawatt Laser, which produces a 186 J 167 fs pulse based on the combination of optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) and mixed Nd:glass amplification, is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Commissioning and early experiments of the PHELIX facility
Vincent Bagnoud,Bastian Aurand,A. Blazevic,Stefan Borneis,C. Bruske,B. Ecker,B. Ecker,U. Eisenbarth,J. Fils,A. Frank,Erhard Gaul,S. Goette,Constantin Haefner,T. Hahn,K. Harres,H.-M. Heuck,D. C. Hochhaus,Dieter H. H. Hoffmann,D. Javorková,Hans-Jürgen Kluge,Thomas Kuehl,S. Kunzer,M. Kreutz,T. Merz-Mantwill,Paul Neumayer,E. Onkels,D. Reemts,O. N. Rosmej,Markus Roth,T. Stoehlker,T. Stoehlker,Anna Tauschwitz,Bernhard Zielbauer,D. Zimmer,D. Zimmer,K. Witte +35 more
TL;DR: The Petawatt High Energy Laser for heavy Ion eXperiments (PHELIX) as discussed by the authors has been commissioned for operation in stand-alone mode and, in combination with ions accelerated up to an energy of 13 MeV/u by the heavy ion accelerator UNILAC enables a large variety of unique experiments.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ultrashort Pulsed Neutron Source
Ishay Pomerantz,E. McCary,Alexander R. Meadows,Alexey Arefiev,Aaron C Bernstein,C. Chester,José René Fuentes Cortez,Michael E Donovan,Gilliss Dyer,Erhard Gaul,David Hamilton,Donghoon Kuk,A. C. Lestrade,Chun-Yuan Wang,Todd Ditmire,Bjorn Hegelich +15 more
TL;DR: This work reports on a novel compact laser-driven neutron source with an unprecedented short pulse duration and high peak flux, an order of magnitude higher than any existing source, that opens venues for enhancing neutron radiography contrast and for creating astrophysical conditions of heavy element synthesis in the laboratory.
Journal ArticleDOI
Laser-driven ion acceleration from relativistically transparent nanotargets
Bjorn Hegelich,Bjorn Hegelich,Ishay Pomerantz,Lin Yin,H. C. Wu,Daniel Jung,Brian J. Albright,Donald C. Gautier,Samuel A. Letzring,Sasikumar Palaniyappan,R. C. Shah,K. Allinger,Rainer Hörlein,Jörg Schreiber,Dietrich Habs,Joel Blakeney,Gilliss Dyer,L. Fuller,Erhard Gaul,E. McCary,Alexander R. Meadows,Chun-Yuan Wang,Todd Ditmire,Juan C. Fernández +23 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present experimental results on laser-driven ion acceleration from relativistically transparent, overdense plasmas in the break-out afterburner (BOA) regime.
