Tiia Ngandu,Tiia Ngandu,Jenni Lehtisalo,Alina Solomon,Alina Solomon,Esko Levälahti,Satu Ahtiluoto,Riitta Antikainen,Lars Bäckman,Tuomo Hänninen,Antti Jula,Tiina Laatikainen,Tiina Laatikainen,Jaana Lindström,Francesca Mangialasche,Teemu Paajanen,Satu Pajala,Markku Peltonen,Rainer Rauramaa,Anna Stigsdotter-Neely,Timo E. Strandberg,Timo E. Strandberg,Jaakko Tuomilehto,Hilkka Soininen,Miia Kivipelto +24 more
TL;DR: In the Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER), a proof-of-concept randomised controlled trial, the authors aimed to assess a multidomain approach to prevent cognitive decline in at-risk elderly people from the general population.

Prevalence of dementia and major subtypes in Europe : A collaborative study of population-based cohorts
A. Lobo,Lenore J. Launer,Laura Fratiglioni,Kjeld Andersen,A. Di Carlo,Monique M.B. Breteler,John R. M. Copeland,J. F. Dartigues,Carol Jagger,J.M. Martinez-Lage,Hilkka Soininen,Albert Hofman +11 more
TL;DR: Dementia is more prevalent in women, and AD is the main contributor to the steep increase of prevalence with age, so a large variation across studies was observed, as well as a difference in prevalence between men and women that was age dependent.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER): Study design and progress
Miia Kivipelto,Alina Solomon,Alina Solomon,Satu Ahtiluoto,Tiia Ngandu,Tiia Ngandu,Jenni Lehtisalo,Riitta Antikainen,Lars Bäckman,Tuomo Hänninen,Antti Jula,Tiina Laatikainen,Jaana Lindström,Francesca Mangialasche,Aulikki Nissinen,Teemu Paajanen,Satu Pajala,Markku Peltonen,Rainer Rauramaa,Anna Stigsdotter-Neely,Timo E. Strandberg,Timo E. Strandberg,Jaakko Tuomilehto,Hilkka Soininen +23 more
TL;DR: The Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER) as mentioned in this paper is a multidomain intervention consisting of nutritional guidance; exercise; cognitive training and social activity; and management of metabolic and vascular risk factors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Familial Aggregation of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders: A Collaborative Re-Analysis of Case-Control Studies
C M van Duijn,David Clayton,Vijay Chandra,L Fratiglioni,A B Graves,A Heyman,Anthony F. Jorm,E Kokmen,Kiyotaro Kondo,James A. Mortimer,Walter A. Rocca,Stuart L. Shalat,Hilkka Soininen,A. Hofman +13 more
TL;DR: Case-control studies of Alzheimer's disease were re-analysed to examine the association of Alzheimer’s disease with family history in first degree relatives of dementia, Down's syndrome and Parkinson's disease and showed a significant association between Alzheimer's Disease and family history of Down's Syndrome.
Journal ArticleDOI
Verbal fluency activates the left medial temporal lobe: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.
Maija Pihlajamäki,Heikki Tanila,Tuomo Hänninen,Mervi Könönen,Mikko P. Laakso,Kaarina Partanen,Hilkka Soininen,Hannu J. Aronen +7 more
TL;DR: Functional magnetic resonance imaging combined with a category fluency task may provide a new method to study patients with early Alzheimer's disease and suggest that the medial temporal lobe is required for the process of retrieval by category.
