Mild cognitive impairment

This article attempts to bring together basic and complex information which has been gathered on cellulose structure, principally that of native cellulose, over the last few decades. Even though advances have been made in the field of crystallography, powder crystallography cannot yield a definitive cellulose structure and single crystal diffraction is not possible due to the lack of suitable crystals. Knowledge obtained on the biosynthesis of native cellulose and on the polymorphy of cellulose and its derivatives help our understanding of ultrastructure. Many inconsistencies between early crystallographic studies of native cellulose have been clarified by the discovery that two polymorphs (α and β) of cellulose I exist. Models of the possible ultrastructural arrangements within native cellulose have been put forward over the decades; with advancement in technology, computer simulations of small and large systems are being created to test the viability of these ultrastructural models. It is hoped that this review will aid in the understanding of the complexity and uncertainties that still exist in this subject

Cellulose: the structure slowly unravels

Summary Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is needed to initiate symptomatic treatment with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, and will be of even greater significance if drugs aimed at slowing down the degenerative process, such as vaccination regimes and β-secretase and γ-secretase inhibitors, prove to affect AD pathology and to have clinical effect. However, there is no clinical method to determine in which patients mild cognitive impairment (MCI) will progress to AD with dementia, and in which patients MCI is benign. Hence, there is a great clinical need for biomarkers to identify incipient AD in patients with MCI. The CSF biomarkers total tau protein, phosphorylated tau protein, and the 42 amino-acid residue form of amyloid-β may, if put in the right clinical context, prove to have high enough diagnostic accuracy to meet this challenge.

A novel packet data transmission strategy for personal handy-phone system

Remote keyless entry systems have penetrated the vehicular market due to its convenience. However, its vulnerability against relay attacks exploiting the wireless channel is a serious threat. One of the prominent countermeasures is radio ranging between the key fob and the vehicle. Taking into account radio regulations, usability and power consumption among other things, a suitable approach is necessary to devise. This article proposes sub-GHz two-way ranging based on phase detection which offers high tolerance against reference clock offset between a pair of transceiver devices and a novel compensation scheme against multipath effects. We present the operation principle and theoretical performance under a two-path model of radio propagation and additive white Gaussian noise. In field experiments with prototype devices, the ranging accuracy is validated. We show that the proposed ranging produces sufficient performance for remote keyless entry systems, confirming if the key fob is within a few meters of the vehicle.

Sub-GHz Two-Way Ranging Based on Phase Detection for Remote Keyless Entry Systems

Intravascular surgery using catheters, such as coil embolization and stent placement, is a minimally invasive treatment. However, doctors need to be skillful to perform precise intravascular surgery. It is expected that displacement of the blood vessel wall caused by unexperienced doctor's manipulation of a guidewire and a catheter is relatively larger and more frequent than that of experienced skillful doctor's. Although several s intravascular surgery simulators have been developed to obtain the intravascular treatment skills, they cannot evaluate a quantitative difference of skills between unexperienced doctors and experienced skillful doctors. In this study, ultrasound micro sensors mounted on flexible substrates have been fabricated for installing in the blood vessel model locally. Three sensors were located near the blood vessel model and this model was filled with 5-wt% poly vinyl alcohol-hydrogel (PVA-H). This model is useful to measure displacement of the blood vessel wall of the model when the catheter contacts and pushes the blood vessel wall from inside. When the catheter contacted, displacement of blood vessel wall was measured about 150 μm by a fabricated ultrasound sensor. It is expected that this model is useful to evaluate skillfulness of intravascular doctor's technique and effectiveness of training.

Development of a blood vessel model with ultrasound sensors to quantify intravascular treatment skills

We present evaluation results for DC offset in the direct conversion receiver for W-CDMA with low current consumption. Measured results indicate that steady-state DC offset is suppressed to less than 30mV and transitional variation in DC offset with gain change is limited to around 100mV. The computer simulation revealed that negligible degradation in bit error rate (BER) performance due to the DC offset transition occurs with the proposed receiver.
