Journal ArticleDOI
Cancer: a missing link in ecosystem functioning?
Marion Vittecoq,Benjamin Roche,Simon P. Daoust,Hugo Ducasse,Dorothée Missé,Jérôme Abadie,Sophie Labrut,François Renaud,Michel Gauthier-Clerc,Frédéric Thomas +9 more
TL;DR: The diversity of ways in which oncogenic phenomena, from precancerous lesions to generalized metastatic cancers, may affect ecological processes that govern biotic interactions are described.
Journal ArticleDOI
Escape of spring frost and disease through phenological variations in oak populations along elevation gradients
Cécile Françoise Dantec,Cécile Françoise Dantec,Hugo Ducasse,Xavier Capdevielle,Xavier Capdevielle,Olivier Fabreguettes,Olivier Fabreguettes,Sylvain Delzon,Sylvain Delzon,Marie-Laure Desprez-Loustau,Marie-Laure Desprez-Loustau +10 more
TL;DR: The observed patterns suggest that oak populations are better adapted to escape spring frost than pathogen exposure all along the elevation gradient, and the combination of the biotic and abiotic selective pressures may have contributed to the maintenance of phenological diversity within low-elevation tree populations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Animal behaviour and cancer
Marion Vittecoq,Hugo Ducasse,Audrey Arnal,Anders Pape Møller,Beata Ujvari,Camille Jacqueline,Tazzio Tissot,Dorothée Missé,Florence Bernex,Nelly Pirot,K. Lemberger,Jérôme Abadie,Sophie Labrut,François Bonhomme,François Renaud,Benjamin Roche,Frédéric Thomas +16 more
TL;DR: It is argued that several behaviours that are routine in an individual's life can be associated with cancer risks, or conversely prevent/cure malignancies and/or alleviate their detrimental consequences for fitness.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evolutionary perspective of cancer: myth, metaphors, and reality
Audrey Arnal,Beata Ujvari,Bernard J. Crespi,Robert A. Gatenby,Tazzio Tissot,Marion Vittecoq,Paul W. Ewald,Andreu Casali,Hugo Ducasse,Camille Jacqueline,Dorothée Missé,François Renaud,Benjamin Roche,Frédéric Thomas +13 more
TL;DR: The evolutionary perspective of cancer has gained significant international recognition over the past decade and generated a wave of enthusiasm among researchers, but this approach seems essential for the applications of evolutionary biology to understand the origin of cancers, with prophylactic and therapeutic applications.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cancer: an emergent property of disturbed resource-rich environments? Ecology meets personalized medicine
Hugo Ducasse,Audrey Arnal,Audrey Arnal,Marion Vittecoq,Simon P. Daoust,Beata Ujvari,Camille Jacqueline,Camille Jacqueline,Tazzio Tissot,Tazzio Tissot,Paul W. Ewald,Robert A. Gatenby,Kayla C. King,François Bonhomme,Jacques Brodeur,François Renaud,François Renaud,Eric Solary,Benjamin Roche,Frédéric Thomas,Frédéric Thomas +20 more
TL;DR: This work provides a compelling argument that the traditional separation between medicine and evolutionary ecology remains a fundamental limitation that needs to be overcome if complex processes, such as oncogenesis, are to be completely understood.
