This paper reviews recent studies on the semiconductor photocatalysis based on surface-modified TiO2 of which application is mainly focused on environmental remediation. TiO2 photocatalysis that is based on the photoinduced interfacial charge transfer has been extensively studied over the past four decades. A great number of modification methods of semiconductor photocatalysts have been developed and investigated to accelerate the photoconversion, to enable the absorption of visible light, or to alter the reaction mechanism to control the products and intermediates. In this regard, various modification methods of TiO2 are classified according to the kind of surface modifiers (metal-loading, impurity doping, inorganic adsorbates, polymer coating, dye-sensitization, charge transfer complexation) and their effects on photocatalytic reaction mechanism and kinetics are discussed in detail. Modifying TiO2 in various ways not only changes the mechanism and kinetics under UV irradiation but also introduces visible light activity that is absent with pure TiO2. Each modification method influences the photocatalytic activity and mechanism in a way different from others and the observed modification effects are often different depending on the test substrates and conditions even for the same modification method. Better understanding of the modification effects on TiO2 photocatalysis is necessary to obtain reliable results, to assess the photoconversion efficiency more quantitatively, and to further improve the modification methods.

Surface modification of TiO2 photocatalyst for environmental applications

One-dimensional TiO2 (1D TiO2) nanomaterials with unique structural and functional properties have been extensively used in various fields including photocatalytic degradation of pollutants, photocatalytic CO2 reduction into energy fuels, water splitting, solar cells, supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries. In the past few decades, 1D TiO2 nanostructured materials with a well-controlled size and morphology have been designed and synthesized. Compared to 0D and 2D nanostructures, more attention has been paid to 1D TiO2 nanostructures due to their high aspect ratio, large specific surface area, and excellent electronic or ionic charge transport properties. In this review, we present the crystal structure of TiO2 and the latest development on the fabrication of 1D TiO2 nanostructured materials. Besides, we will look into some critical engineering strategies that give rise to the excellent properties of 1D TiO2 nanostructures such as improved enlargement of the surface area, light absorption and efficient separation of electrons/holes that benefit their potential applications. Moreover, their corresponding environmental and energy applications are described and discussed. With the fast development of the current economy and technology, more and more effort will be put into endowing TiO2-based materials with advanced functionalities and other promising applications.

A review of one-dimensional TiO2 nanostructured materials for environmental and energy applications

In view of the situation that environmental issues become more serious day by day, recent studies on practical applications of TiO 2 photocatalysis for environmental purification are reviewed. Although the fundamental aspects and the mechanisms of TiO 2 photocatalysis have recently become quite well understood, effective photocatalytic environmental purifier, especially water purifier, could not be developed to the stage of real industrial technology. The removal rate of gaseous or aqueous contaminants is influenced by numerous parameters; UV light intensity, substrate concentration, O 2 partial pressure, humidity, substrate type, and so on. Moreover, TiO 2 photocatalyst essentially has a difficulty in decomposition of large amount of contaminants or refractory chemicals. As the solutions of these problems, combination with other processes such as advanced oxidation processes and improvement of the design of photocatalytic environmental purification systems are described. During the past several years, the strategies for effective design of the system are well discussed and evaluated. The reactor design for air- or water-purification can be classified into two main strategies: (1) enlargement of reactive surface area and (2) improvement of mass transfer. Based on these insights, very recent achievements for development of photocatalytic environmental purification system with our contribution in each aspect and future research directions are reviewed.

Photoelectrochemical properties of TiO2 photocatalyst and its applications for environmental purification

Cu2O/TiO2 p–n heterojunction photoelectrodes were prepared by depositing different amounts of p-type Cu2O nanoparticles on n-type TiO2 nanotube arrays (i.e., forming Cu2O/TiO2 composite nanotubes) via an ultrasonication-assisted sequential chemical bath deposition. The success of deposition of Cu2O nanoparticles was corroborated by structural and composition characterizations. The enhanced absorption in the visible light region was observed in Cu2O/TiO2 composite nanotubes. The largely improved separation of photogenerated electrons and holes was revealed by photocurrent measurements. Consequently, Cu2O/TiO2 heterojunction photoelectrodes exhibited a more effective photoconversion capability than TiO2 nanotubes alone in photoelectrochemical measurements. Furthermore, Cu2O/TiO2 composite photoelectrodes also possessed superior photoelectrocatalytic activity and stability in the degradation of Rhodamine B. Intriguingly, by selecting an appropriate bias potential, a synergistic effect between electricity and visible light irradiation can be achieved.

p-n Heterojunction photoelectrodes composed of Cu2O-loaded TiO2 nanotube arrays with enhanced photoelectrochemical and photoelectrocatalytic activities

Semiconductor photocatalysis is a promising physicochemical process for the photodegradation of organic contaminants and bacterial detoxification. Among various oxide semiconductor photocatalysts, TiO2 has garnered considerable attention because of its outstanding properties including strong oxidizing activity, chemical and mechanical stability, corrosion resistance, and nontoxicity. This Review briefly introduces the key mechanisms of photocatalysis, highlights the recent developments pertaining to pure TiO2 nanotube arrays and TiO2 nanotube arrays modified by non-metals, metals and semiconductors, and their applications in the photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes. The improved photocatalytic efficiencies of modified TiO2 nanotube arrays are compared with unmodified counterparts. Current challenges and prospective areas of interest in this rich field are also presented.
