Jayne,Scott C. Herndon,A. Trimborn,Leah R. Williams,Ezra C. Wood,Ann M. Middlebrook,Charles E. Kolb,Urs Baltensperger,Douglas R. Worsnop +66 more
TL;DR: A unifying model framework describing the atmospheric evolution of OA that is constrained by high–time-resolution measurements of its composition, volatility, and oxidation state is presented, which can serve as a basis for improving parameterizations in regional and global models.
Journal ArticleDOI
Carbon oxidation state as a metric for describing the chemistry of atmospheric organic aerosol
Jesse H. Kroll,Neil M. Donahue,Jose L. Jimenez,Sean H. Kessler,Manjula R. Canagaratna,Kevin R. Wilson,Katye E. Altieri,Lynn Mazzoleni,Andrew S. Wozniak,Hendrik Bluhm,Erin R. Mysak,Erin R. Mysak,Jared D. Smith,Jared D. Smith,Charles E. Kolb,Douglas R. Worsnop +15 more
TL;DR: The utility of describing organic aerosol in terms of average carbon oxidation state, a quantity that always increases with oxidation, is demonstrated and is readily measured using state-of-the-art analytical techniques.
Journal ArticleDOI
Energetics of hydrogen bond network rearrangements in liquid water.
Jared D. Smith,Christopher D. Cappa,Kevin R. Wilson,Benjamin Messer,Ronald C. Cohen,Richard J. Saykally +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, a strong temperature dependence of oxygen K-edge x-ray absorption fine structure features was observed for supercooled and normal liquid water droplets prepared from the breakup of a liquid microjet.
Journal ArticleDOI
Unified description of temperature-dependent hydrogen-bond rearrangements in liquid water.
Jared D. Smith,Christopher D. Cappa,Kevin R. Wilson,Ronald C. Cohen,Phillip L. Geissler,Richard J. Saykally +5 more
TL;DR: It is shown here that many of the features of the Raman spectrum that are considered to be hallmarks of a multistate system, including the asymmetric band profile, the isosbestic (temperature invariant) point, and van't Hoff behavior, actually result from a continuous distribution.
Journal ArticleDOI
The effects of dissolved halide anions on hydrogen bonding in liquid water.
TL;DR: It is shown that changes in O-H vibrational spectra induced by the alkali halides in liquid water result instead from the actions of ions' electric fields on adjacent water molecules.
