Journal ArticleDOI

Evolution of the subglacial drainage system beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet revealed by tracers

TL;DR: In this article, rhodamine and sulphur hexafluoride tracers were injected into the drainage system over three melt seasons, to observe subglacial drainage properties and evolution beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet, up to 57 km from the margin.
Journal ArticleDOI

Supraglacial forcing of subglacial drainage in the ablation zone of the Greenland ice sheet

TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured hydrological parameters in meltwater draining from an outlet glacier in west Greenland to investigate seasonal changes in the structure and behaviour of the hydrologogical system of a large catchment in the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS).
Journal ArticleDOI

Potential methane reservoirs beneath Antarctica

TL;DR: The results demonstrate the potential for methane hydrate accumulation in Antarctic sedimentary basins, where the total inventory depends on rates of organic carbon degradation and conditions at the ice-sheet bed, and calculate that the sub-Antarctic hydrate inventory could be of the same order of magnitude as that of recent estimates made for Arctic permafrost.
Journal ArticleDOI

Photophysiology and albedo-changing potential of the ice algal community on the surface of the Greenland ice sheet.

TL;DR: It is shown that heavily pigmented, actively photosynthesising microalgae and cyanobacteria are present on the bare ice, and the widespread abundance of green algae in the Zygnematophyceae on the ice sheet surface in Southwest Greenland.
