Aggregation-Induced Emission: Together We Shine, United We Soar!

Luminogenic materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) attributes have attracted much interest since the debut of the AIE concept in 2001. In this critical review, recent progress in the area of AIE research is summarized. Typical examples of AIE systems are discussed, from which their structure–property relationships are derived. Through mechanistic decipherment of the photophysical processes, structural design strategies for generating new AIE luminogens are developed. Technological, especially optoelectronic and biological, applications of the AIE systems are exemplified to illustrate how the novel AIE effect can be utilized for high-tech innovations (183 references).

Aggregation-induced emission

"United we stand, divided we fall."--Aesop. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) refers to a photophysical phenomenon shown by a group of luminogenic materials that are non-emissive when they are dissolved in good solvents as molecules but become highly luminescent when they are clustered in poor solvents or solid state as aggregates. In this Review we summarize the recent progresses made in the area of AIE research. We conduct mechanistic analyses of the AIE processes, unify the restriction of intramolecular motions (RIM) as the main cause for the AIE effects, and derive RIM-based molecular engineering strategies for the design of new AIE luminogens (AIEgens). Typical examples of the newly developed AIEgens and their high-tech applications as optoelectronic materials, chemical sensors and biomedical probes are presented and discussed.

Aggregation-Induced Emission: The Whole Is More Brilliant than the Parts

Two-photon excitation provides a means of activating chemical or physical processes with high spatial resolution in three dimensions and has made possible the development of three-dimensional fluorescence imaging, optical data storage, and lithographic microfabrication. These applications take advantage of the fact that the two-photon absorption probability depends quadratically on intensity, so under tight-focusing conditions, the absorption is confined at the focus to a volume of order λ3 (where λ is the laser wavelength). Any subsequent process, such as fluorescence or a photoinduced chemical reaction, is also localized in this small volume. Although three-dimensional data storage and microfabrication have been illustrated using two-photon-initiated polymerization of resins incorporating conventional ultraviolet-absorbing initiators, such photopolymer systems exhibit low photosensitivity as the initiators have small two-photon absorption cross-sections (δ). Consequently, this approach requires high laser power, and its widespread use remains impractical. Here we report on a class of π;-conjugated compounds that exhibit large δ (as high as 1, 250 × 10−50 cm4 s per photon) and enhanced two-photon sensitivity relative to ultraviolet initiators. Two-photon excitable resins based on these new initiators have been developed and used to demonstrate a scheme for three-dimensional data storage which permits fluorescent and refractive read-out, and the fabrication of three-dimensional micro-optical and micromechanical structures, including photonic-bandgap-type structures.

Two-photon polymerization initiators for three-dimensional optical data storage and microfabrication

This article is written from an organic chemist's point of view and provides an up-to-date review about organic solar cells based on small molecules or oligomers as absorbers and in detail deals with devices that incorporate planar-heterojunctions (PHJ) and bulk heterojunctions (BHJ) between a donor (p-type semiconductor) and an acceptor (n-type semiconductor) material. The article pays particular attention to the design and development of molecular materials and their performance in corresponding devices. In recent years, a substantial amount of both, academic and industrial research, has been directed towards organic solar cells, in an effort to develop new materials and to improve their tunability, processability, power conversion efficiency, and stability. On the eve of commercialization of organic solar cells, this review provides an overview over efficiencies attained with small molecules/oligomers in OSCs and reflects materials and device concepts developed over the last decade. Approaches to enhancing the efficiency of organic solar cells are analyzed.

Small molecule organic semiconductors on the move: promises for future solar energy technology.

One may discover a stone tool by chance but it takes more than luck to make a car or cell phone. With the advance of nanoscience, the synthesis of increasingly sophisticated nanostructures demands a rational design and a systems approach. In this Review, we advocate the distinction between thermodynamically and kinetically controlled scenarios, that is, whether a product forms because it is the most stable state or because the pathway leading to it has the lowest energy barrier. Great endeavours have been made to describe the multiple concurrent processes in typical nanosynthesis phenomena, so that the mechanistic proposals in the literature are brought into a common framework for easy contrast and comparison.

Thermodynamics versus Kinetics in Nanosynthesis

We have studied the crystal structures and photophysical properties of four 9,10-distyrylanthracene (DSA) derivatives. Their crystal structures exhibit nonplanar conformations due to the supramolecular interactions resulting in rigid molecules and relative tight stacking. The four DSA derivatives possess a typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property, i.e., they exhibit faint emission in their solutions but intense emission in their crystals as a result of the dominant nonradiative decay by free intramolecular torsion in the solution and the restricted torsional motion by supramolecular interaction in the crystal. The investigation of the relationship between the crystal structures and AIE properties of the four DSA derivatives indicates that DSA moiety is the key factor of AIE property because of the restricted intramolecular torsion between the 9,10-anthrylene core and the vinylene moiety.

Aggregation-Induced Emission in the Crystals of 9,10-Distyrylanthracene Derivatives: The Essential Role of Restricted Intramolecular Torsion

We show that embedding of a surface ligand can dramatically affect the metal–metal interfacial energy, making it possible to create nanostructures in defiance of traditional wisdom. Despite matching Au–Ag lattices, Au–Ag hybrid NPs can be continuously tuned from concentric core–shell, eccentric core–shell, acorn, to dimer structures. This method can be extended to tune even Au–Au and Ag–Ag interfaces.

An Unconventional Role of Ligand in Continuously Tuning of Metal–Metal Interfacial Strain

Growing oxide shells on seed nanoparticles requires the control of several processes: (a) the nucleation and growth of the shell material; (b) the “wetting” of the shell material on the seeds; and (c) the aggregation of the nanoparticles. These processes are influenced by a number of factors, many of which are related. Without understanding the interdependence of these contributing factors, it is difficult to circumvent problems and achieve rational synthesis. We first did a case study on encapsulating Au nanoparticles with ZnO to understand the multiple roles of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and their dependence on other factors. We developed a general method for coating ZnO on a variety of seeds, including metals, oxides, polymer nanoparticles, graphene oxide, and carbon nanotube. This method can be further extended to include Fe3O4, MnO, Co2O3, TiO2, Eu2O3, Tb2O3, Gd2O3, β-Ni(OH)2, ZnS, and CdS as the shell materials. Investigating the Multiple Roles of Polyvinylpyrrolidone for a General Methodology of Oxide Encapsulation

Three functionalized 9,10-distyrylanthracene (DSA) derivatives, namely, 9,10-bis(4-hydroxystyryl)anthracene (2), 9,10-bis{4-[2-(diethylamino)ethoxy]styryl}anthracene (4), and 9,10-bis{4-[2-(N,N,N-triethylammonium)ethoxy]styryl}anthracene dibromide (5), were synthesized and their fluorescence properties were investigated. The three DSA derivatives possess a typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property (i.e., they are nonluminescent in dilute solutions but are efficiently fluorescent as induced by molecular aggregation). Different AIE properties were tuned through molecular structure control. Dye 2 is a phenol-moiety-containing compound, which shows aggregation at pH values smaller than 10, resulting in a high fluorescence intensity.
