Percutaneous revascularization procedures are selected with increasing frequency as the therapy of choice for many patients with symptomatic atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. Balloon angioplasty and related interventional strategies achieve vessel patency rates of > 95% by clinical and angiographic criteria; however, in 30–40% of patients, the long-term success of this outcome is jeopardized by restenosis [1–4]. Despite recent innovations in device design and the introduction of novel adjunctive therapies, the rate of clinical restenosis has only marginally improved.
