Ordovician faunas of Burgess Shale type
Peter Van Roy,Peter Van Roy,Patrick J. Orr,Joseph P. Botting,Lucy A. Muir,Jakob Vinther,Bertrand Lefebvre,Khadija El Hariri,Derek E. G. Briggs,Derek E. G. Briggs +9 more
TL;DR: The discovery of numerous diverse soft-bodied assemblages in the Lower and Upper Fezouata Formations (Lower Ordovician) of Morocco are reported, which include a range of remarkable stem-group morphologies normally considered characteristic of the Cambrian.
Discovery of 505-million-year old chitin in the basal demosponge Vauxia gracilenta - Supplementary information
Hermann Ehrlich,J. Keith Rigby,Joseph P. Botting,Mikhail V. Tsurkan,Carsten Werner,Petra Schwille,Zdeněk Petrášek,Andrzej Pisera,Paul Simon,V N Sivkov,Denis V. Vyalikh,Serguei L. Molodtsov,Denis V. Kurek,Martin Kammer,S. Hunoldt,René Born,Dawid Stawski,A. Steinhof,Vasilii V. Bazhenov,Thorsten Geisler +19 more
TL;DR: The discovery of 505–million-year-old chitin is presented, found in exceptionally well preserved Vauxia gracilenta sponges from the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale, indicating that, given the right fossilization conditions, chit in is stable for much longer than previously suspected.

TL;DR: In this paper, the discovery of 505-million-year-old chitin, found in exceptionally well preserved Vauxia gracilenta sponges from the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale, was presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Insights into Chemistry of Biological Materials: Newly Discovered Silica-Aragonite-Chitin Biocomposites in Demosponges
Hermann Ehrlich,Paul Simon,Wilder Carrillo-Cabrera,Vasily V. Bazhenov,Joseph P. Botting,Micha Ilan,Alexander V. Ereskovsky,Guilherme Muricy,Hartmut Worch,Axel Mensch,René Born,Armin Springer,Kurt Kummer,Denis V. Vyalikh,Serguei L. Molodtsov,Denis V. Kurek,Martin Kammer,Silvia Paasch,Eike Brunner +18 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a unique biocomposite of amorphous silica, crystalline aragonite, and chitin from species of the order Verongida, a group of marine sponges, is described.
Journal ArticleDOI
Unexpected Early Triassic marine ecosystem and the rise of the Modern evolutionary fauna.
Arnaud Brayard,Laurel J. Krumenacker,Joseph P. Botting,James F. Jenks,Kevin G. Bylund,Emmanuel Fara,Emmanuelle Vennin,Nicolas Olivier,Nicolas Goudemand,Thomas Saucède,Sylvain Charbonnier,Carlo Romano,Larisa A. Doguzhaeva,Ben Thuy,Michael Hautmann,Daniel A. Stephen,Christophe Thomazo,Gilles Escarguel +17 more
TL;DR: The Paris Biota highlights the key evolutionary position of Early Triassic fossil ecosystems in the transition from the Paleozoic to the Modern marine evolutionary fauna at the dawn of the Mesozoic era.
