Discovery of 505-million-year old chitin in the basal demosponge Vauxia gracilenta - Supplementary information
Hermann Ehrlich,J. Keith Rigby,Joseph P. Botting,Mikhail V. Tsurkan,Carsten Werner,Petra Schwille,Zdeněk Petrášek,Andrzej Pisera,Paul Simon,V N Sivkov,Denis V. Vyalikh,Serguei L. Molodtsov,Denis V. Kurek,Martin Kammer,S. Hunoldt,René Born,Dawid Stawski,A. Steinhof,Vasilii V. Bazhenov,Thorsten Geisler +19 more
TL;DR: The discovery of 505–million-year-old chitin is presented, found in exceptionally well preserved Vauxia gracilenta sponges from the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale, indicating that, given the right fossilization conditions, chit in is stable for much longer than previously suspected.
Journal ArticleDOI
First evidence of chitin as a component of the skeletal fibers of marine sponges. Part I. Verongidae (demospongia: Porifera).
Hermann Ehrlich,Manuel Maldonado,Klaus-Dieter Spindler,Carsten Eckert,Thomas Hanke,René Born,Caren Goebel,Paul Simon,Sascha Heinemann,Hartmut Worch +9 more
TL;DR: Findings support the view that the occurrence of a chitin-producing system is the ancestral condition in Metazoa, and that the alpha-chitin is the primitive form in animals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Chitin-based scaffolds are an integral part of the skeleton of the marine demosponge Ianthella basta
Eike Brunner,Hermann Ehrlich,Peter J. Schupp,René Hedrich,S. Hunoldt,Martin Kammer,Susanne Machill,Silvia Paasch,Vasilii V. Bazhenov,Denis V. Kurek,T. Arnold,S. Brockmann,Michael Ruhnow,René Born +13 more
TL;DR: It is shown that a filigree chitin-based scaffold is an integral component of the I. basta skeleton and can be isolated from the sponge skeletons using an isolation and purification technique based on treatment with alkaline solutions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Three-dimensional chitin-based scaffolds from Verongida sponges (Demospongiae: Porifera). Part I. Isolation and identification of chitin.
Hermann Ehrlich,Micha Ilan,Manuel Maldonado,Guilherme Muricy,Giorgio Bavestrello,Zoran Kljajić,José Luis Carballo,Stefano Schiaparelli,Alexander V. Ereskovsky,Peter J. Schupp,René Born,Hartmut Worch,Vasilii V. Bazhenov,Denis V. Kurek,Valery P. Varlamov,Denis V. Vyalikh,Kurt Kummer,Vadim Sivkov,Serguei L. Molodtsov,Heike Meissner,Gert Richter,Eric Steck,Wiltrud Richter,S. Hunoldt,Martin Kammer,Silvia Paasch,V. Krasokhin,Greta R. Patzke,Eike Brunner +28 more
TL;DR: A detailed study of the structural and physico-chemical properties of three-dimensional skeletal scaffolds of the marine sponges Aiolochroia crassa, Aplysina aerophoba, and A. cavernicola shows that these fibrous scaffolds have a multilayered design and are made of chitin.
Journal ArticleDOI
Interlayers for diamond deposition on tool materials
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the suitability of hard coatings for diamond growth and showed that diamond films with low non-diamond quantity grew on interlayers of TiC, SiC and SiCxNy.
