Journal ArticleDOI
Partial restoration of the microbiota of cesarean-born infants via vaginal microbial transfer
Maria Gloria Dominguez-Bello,Maria Gloria Dominguez-Bello,Kassandra M. De Jesús-Laboy,Nan Shen,Laura M. Cox,Amnon Amir,Antonio Gonzalez,Nicholas A. Bokulich,Se Jin Song,Se Jin Song,Marina Hoashi,Juana I Rivera-Viñas,Keimari Mendez,Rob Knight,Jose C. Clemente +14 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that vaginal microbes can be partially restored at birth in C-section–delivered babies.
Journal ArticleDOI
The first microbial environment of infants born by C-section: the operating room microbes.
Hakdong Shin,Zhiheng Pei,Zhiheng Pei,Keith A. Martinez,Juana I Rivera-Viñas,Keimari Mendez,Humberto Cavallin,Maria Gloria Dominguez-Bello +7 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that the dust from ORs, collected right after a C-section procedure, contains deposits of human skin bacteria, and the OR microbiota is the first environment for C- section newborns, and OR microbes might be seeding the microbiome in these babies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Naturalization of the microbiota developmental trajectory of Cesarean-born neonates after vaginal seeding
Se Jin Song,Jincheng Wang,Cameron Martino,Lingjing Jiang,Wesley K. Thompson,Liat Shenhav,Daniel McDonald,Clarisse Marotz,Paul R. Harris,Caroll Hernández,Nora Henderson,Elizabeth Ackley,Deanna Nardella,Charles Gillihan,Valentina Montacuti,William Schweizer,Melanie Jay,Joan Combellick,Haipeng Sun,Izaskun García-Mantrana,Fernando Gil Raga,Maria Carmen Collado,Juana I Rivera-Viñas,Maribel Campos-Rivera,Jean F. Ruiz-Calderon,Rob Knight,Maria Gloria Dominguez-Bello +26 more
TL;DR: This is the first study showing long-term naturalization of the microbiota of CS-born infants by restoring microbial exposure at birth, and provides evidence of the pluripotential nature of maternal vaginal fluids to provide pioneer bacterial colonizers for the newborn body sites.
Journal ArticleDOI
Erratum to: The first microbial environment of infants born by C-section: the operating room microbes
Hakdong Shin,Zhiheng Pei,Zhiheng Pei,Keith A. Martinez,Juana I Rivera-Viñas,Keimari Mendez,Humberto Cavallin,Maria Gloria Dominguez-Bello +7 more
TL;DR: After publication of this article, the authors noticed one of the collaborator’s names had been misspelled in the ‘Acknowledgements’ section and the correct version is included below.
Journal ArticleDOI
PEARLS randomized lifestyle trial in pregnant Hispanic women with overweight/obesity: gestational weight gain and offspring birthweight
María Angélica Trak-Fellermeier,Maribel Campos,Marytere Meléndez,Jeremy Pomeroy,Cristina Palacios,Juana I Rivera-Viñas,Keimari Mendez,Irma Febo,Walter C. Willett,Matthew W. Gillman,Paul W. Franks,Paul W. Franks,Kaumudi Joshipura,Kaumudi Joshipura +13 more
TL;DR: Although larger studies are required to determine whether women with obesity may benefit from prenatal lifestyle interventions targeting GWG, the results are suggestive of the intervention improving adherence to established Institute of Medicine guidelines.
