Journal ArticleDOI
Antibiotics, birth mode, and diet shape microbiome maturation during early life
Nicholas A. Bokulich,Jennifer Chung,Thomas Battaglia,Nora Henderson,Melanie Jay,Huilin Li,Arnon D. Lieber,Fen Wu,Guillermo I. Perez-Perez,Yu Chen,William Schweizer,Xuhui Zheng,Monica Contreras,Maria Gloria Dominguez-Bello,Martin J. Blaser,Martin J. Blaser +15 more
TL;DR: It is shown that antibiotics, cesarean section, and infant formula alter patterns of microbial acquisition and succession during the first 2 years of childhood, which illustrates the complexity of early-life microbiome development and its sensitivity to perturbation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characteristics and outcomes of 241 births to women with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection at five New York city medical centers
Rasha Khoury,Peter S. Bernstein,Chelsea DeBolt,Joanne Stone,Desmond Sutton,Lynn L. Simpson,Meghana Limaye,Ashley S. Roman,Melissa Fazzari,Christina A. Penfield,Lauren Ferrara,Calvin Lambert,Lisa Nathan,Rodney L. Wright,Angela Bianco,Brian Wagner,Dena Goffman,Cynthia Gyamfi-Bannerman,William Schweizer,Karina Avila,Bijan Khaksari,Meghan Proehl,Fabiano Heitor,Johanna Monro,David L. Keefe,Mary E. D'Alton,Michael Brodman,Sharmila K. Makhija,Siobhan M. Dolan +28 more
TL;DR: During the first month of the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak in New York City and with evolving testing criteria, most women with laboratory-confirmed infection admitted for delivery did not have symptoms of COVID-19, and disease severity was associated with higher rates of cesarean and preterm birth.
Journal ArticleDOI
Outcomes of Maternal-Newborn Dyads After Maternal SARS-CoV-2.
Sourabh Verma,Chanda Bradshaw,N.S. Freda Auyeung,Rishi Lumba,Jonathan S. Farkas,Nicole B. Sweeney,Elena V. Wachtel,Sean M. Bailey,Asif Noor,Bgee Kunjumon,Erin Cicalese,Rahul Hate,Jennifer Lighter,Samantha Alessi,William Schweizer,Nazeeh Hanna,Ashley S. Roman,Benard P. Dreyer,Pradeep V. Mally +18 more
TL;DR: Although there was no distinct evidence of vertical transmission from mothers with SARS-CoV-2 to their newborns, perinatal morbidities among both mothers and newborns were observed, and Symptomatic mothers were more likely to experience premature delivery and their babies to require intensive care.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prognostic factors for malignant mixed mullerian tumors of the uterus
TL;DR: Interestingly, patients with pedunculated tumors persisted in having an improved survival even after correcting for vascular invasion, compared with patients having broad-based tumor attachment, and small tumor size also proved to be a significant and independent prognostic indicator for improved survival.
Journal ArticleDOI
Naturalization of the microbiota developmental trajectory of Cesarean-born neonates after vaginal seeding
Se Jin Song,Jincheng Wang,Cameron Martino,Lingjing Jiang,Wesley K. Thompson,Liat Shenhav,Daniel McDonald,Clarisse Marotz,Paul R. Harris,Caroll Hernández,Nora Henderson,Elizabeth Ackley,Deanna Nardella,Charles Gillihan,Valentina Montacuti,William Schweizer,Melanie Jay,Joan Combellick,Haipeng Sun,Izaskun García-Mantrana,Fernando Gil Raga,Maria Carmen Collado,Juana I Rivera-Viñas,Maribel Campos-Rivera,Jean F. Ruiz-Calderon,Rob Knight,Maria Gloria Dominguez-Bello +26 more
TL;DR: This is the first study showing long-term naturalization of the microbiota of CS-born infants by restoring microbial exposure at birth, and provides evidence of the pluripotential nature of maternal vaginal fluids to provide pioneer bacterial colonizers for the newborn body sites.
