Journal ArticleDOI
Psychiatric disorders and leukocyte telomere length: Underlying mechanisms linking mental illness with cellular aging.
Daniel Lindqvist,Elissa S. Epel,Synthia H. Mellon,Brenda W.J.H. Penninx,Dóra Révész,Josine E. Verhoeven,Victor I. Reus,Jue Lin,Laura Mahan,Christina M. Hough,Rebecca Rosser,F. Saverio Bersani,Elizabeth H. Blackburn,Owen M. Wolkowitz +13 more
TL;DR: A deeper understanding of cellular aging in psychiatric illnesses could lead to re-conceptualizing them as systemic illnesses with manifestations inside and outside the brain and could identify new treatment targets.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mitochondrial DNA copy number is reduced in male combat veterans with PTSD.
Francesco Saverio Bersani,Claire Morley,Daniel Lindqvist,Elissa S. Epel,Martin Picard,Rachel Yehuda,Janine D. Flory,Linda M. Bierer,Iouri Makotkine,Duna Abu-Amara,Michelle Coy,Victor I. Reus,Jue Lin,Elizabeth H. Blackburn,Charles R. Marmar,Owen M. Wolkowitz,Synthia H. Mellon +16 more
TL;DR: This study provides the first evidence of a significant decrease of mtDNAcn in combat PTSD, a possible "inverted-U" shaped relationship between PTSD symptom severity and mtDNACN within PTSD subjects, and a direct correlation of mt DNAcn with positive affectivity within PTSDSubjects.
Journal ArticleDOI
PBMC telomerase activity, but not leukocyte telomere length, correlates with hippocampal volume in major depression.
Owen M. Wolkowitz,Synthia H. Mellon,Daniel Lindqvist,Elissa S. Epel,Elizabeth H. Blackburn,Jue Lin,Victor I. Reus,Heather M. Burke,Rebecca Rosser,Laura Mahan,Scott Mackin,Tony T. Yang,Michael Weiner,Susanne G. Mueller,Susanne G. Mueller +14 more
TL;DR: Preliminary data are consistent with the possibility that PBMC telomerase activity indexes, and may provide a novel window into, hippocampal neuroprotection and/or neurogenesis in MDD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association of dimensional psychological health measures with telomere length in male war veterans
Francesco Saverio Bersani,Francesco Saverio Bersani,Daniel Lindqvist,Daniel Lindqvist,Synthia H. Mellon,Elissa S. Epel,Rachel Yehuda,Janine D. Flory,Clare Henn-Hasse,Linda M. Bierer,Iouri Makotkine,Duna Abu-Amara,Michelle Coy,Victor I. Reus,Jue Lin,Elizabeth H. Blackburn,Charles R. Marmar,Owen M. Wolkowitz +17 more
TL;DR: The preliminary findings suggest that early trauma, severity of perceived stress and general psychopathological symptoms are more closely associated with shorter telomere length than is the severity of core diagnostic symptoms of PTSD or MDD, whereas positive affect is associated with longer TL.
Journal ArticleDOI
Maternal Psychological Resilience During Pregnancy and Newborn Telomere Length: A Prospective Study.
Glenn Verner,Glenn Verner,Elissa S. Epel,Marius Lahti-Pulkkinen,Eero Kajantie,Claudia Buss,Claudia Buss,Claudia Buss,Jue Lin,Elizabeth H. Blackburn,Katri Räikkönen,Pathik D. Wadhwa,Sonja Entringer,Sonja Entringer,Sonja Entringer +14 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that maternal psychological resilience may exert a salubrious effect on offspring telomere biology and highlight the importance of enhancing maternal mental health and well-being during pregnancy.
