Journal ArticleDOI
Soil microbial community composition and land use history in cultivated and grassland ecosystems of coastal California.
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the relationship between soil physical and chemical characteristics, management factors, and vegetation type with microbial community composition in two coastal valleys in California, and found that higher values of total soil C, N, and microbial biomass (total PLFA) and lower values of soil pH occurred in the grassland than cultivated soils.
Journal ArticleDOI
Land use and climatic factors structure regional patterns in soil microbial communities
TL;DR: Overall, soil water availability was an important determinant of soil microbial community composition, and effects of environmental and management factors suggest that agricultural management can have larger effects on soil microbial communities than elevation and precipitation gradients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Responses of soil microbial processes and community structure to tillage events and implications for soil quality
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the responses of soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics, microbial biomass, and microbial community structure to a tillage event in intensively managed vegetable crop systems in California.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cover crops enhance soil organic matter, carbon dynamics and microbiological function in a vineyard agroecosystem
Kerri L. Steenwerth,K.M. Belina +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the impacts of soil tillage and cover crops on soil carbon dynamics and microbiological function in a vineyard grown in California's mediterranean climate, and evaluated seasonal effects of soil temperature, water content, and precipitation on soil C dynamics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Climate-smart agriculture global research agenda: scientific basis for action
Kerri L. Steenwerth,Amanda K. Hodson,Arnold J. Bloom,Michael R. Carter,Andrea Cattaneo,C. J. Chartres,Jerry L. Hatfield,Kevin Henry,Jan W. Hopmans,William R. Horwath,Bryan M. Jenkins,Ermias Kebreab,Rik Leemans,Leslie Lipper,Mark Lubell,Siwa Msangi,Ravi Prabhu,Matthew P. Reynolds,Samuel Sandoval Solis,William M. Sischo,Michael R. Springborn,Pablo Tittonell,Stephen M. Wheeler,Sonja J. Vermeulen,Eva K. Wollenberg,Lovell S. Jarvis,Louise E. Jackson +26 more
TL;DR: The Global Science Conference on Climate-Smart Agriculture (GSCA) as discussed by the authors focused on contributing to economic development, poverty reduction and food security; maintaining and enhancing the productivity and resilience of natural and agricultural ecosystem functions, thus building natural capital; and reducing trade-offs involved in meeting these goals.
