Topological insulators are new states of quantum matter which cannot be adiabatically connected to conventional insulators and semiconductors. They are characterized by a full insulating gap in the bulk and gapless edge or surface states which are protected by time-reversal symmetry. These topological materials have been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed in a variety of systems, including HgTe quantum wells, BiSb alloys, and Bi2Te3 and Bi2Se3 crystals. Theoretical models, materials properties, and experimental results on two-dimensional and three-dimensional topological insulators are reviewed, and both the topological band theory and the topological field theory are discussed. Topological superconductors have a full pairing gap in the bulk and gapless surface states consisting of Majorana fermions. The theory of topological superconductors is reviewed, in close analogy to the theory of topological insulators.

Topological insulators and superconductors

Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Weyl and Dirac semimetals are three-dimensional phases of matter with gapless electronic excitations that are protected by topology and symmetry. As three-dimensional analogs of graphene, they have generated much recent interest. Deep connections exist with particle physics models of relativistic chiral fermions, and, despite their gaplessness, to solid-state topological and Chern insulators. Their characteristic electronic properties lead to protected surface states and novel responses to applied electric and magnetic fields. The theoretical foundations of these phases, their proposed realizations in solid-state systems, and recent experiments on candidate materials as well as their relation to other states of matter are reviewed.

Weyl and Dirac semimetals in three-dimensional solids

The synthesis of massive arrays of monodispersed carbon nanotubes that are self-oriented on patterned porous silicon and plain silicon substrates is reported. The approach involves chemical vapor deposition, catalytic particle size control by substrate design, nanotube positioning by patterning, and nanotube self-assembly for orientation. The mechanisms of nanotube growth and self-orientation are elucidated. The well-ordered nanotubes can be used as electron field emission arrays. Scaling up of the synthesis process should be entirely compatible with the existing semiconductor processes, and should allow the development of nanotube devices integrated into silicon technology.

Self-Oriented Regular Arrays of Carbon Nanotubes and Their Field Emission Properties

Monolithic integration of photonic crystal lasers and waveguides is proposed using quantum well intermixing. Coupling between a double-heterostructure nanocavity and a regular single-line-defect waveguide is optimized to have a high coupling efficiency (93%) and a high quality factor (6.8 × 103) without fine-tuning of the lattice. The design is completed with a waveguide exit of robust directional far-field. All calculations were performed using the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method.

Efficient coupling between a photonic crystal nanocavity and a waveguide with directional end-facet emission

The interplay between electronic correlations and topological protection may offer a rich avenue for discovering emergent quantum phenomena in condensed matter. However, electronic correlations have so far been little investigated in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) by experiments. Here, we report a combined optical spectroscopy and theoretical calculation study on the strength of electronic correlations in a kagome magnet Co3Sn2S2 and the influence of electronic correlations on its WSM state expected within a single-particle picture. The electronic kinetic energy estimated from our optical data is about half of that obtained from single-particle ab initio calculations, which indicates intermediate-strength electronic correlations in this system. Furthermore, comparing the energy ratios between the interband-transition peaks at high energies in the experimental and single-particle-ab-initio-calculation derived optical conductivity spectra with the electronic bandwidth renormalization factors obtained by many-body calculations enables us to estimate the Coulomb-interaction strength (U ~ 4 eV) of electronic correlations in Co3Sn2S2. Our many-body calculations with U ~ 4 eV show that a WSM state, which is characterized by bulk Weyl cones and surface Fermi arcs, survives in this correlated electron system. Besides, a sharp experimental optical conductivity peak at low energy, which is absent in the single-particle-ab-initio-calculation-derived optical conductivity spectrum but is consistent with the optical conductivity peaks obtained by many-body calculations, indicates that an electronic band connecting the two Weyl cones is flattened by electronic correlations and emerges near the Fermi energy in Co3Sn2S2. Our work paves the way for exploring flat-band-generated quantum phenomena in WSMs.

Electronic correlations and flattened band in magnetic Weyl semimetal candidate Co3Sn2S2

Gapped systems with glide symmetry can be characterized by a Z_2 topological invariant. We study the magnetic photonic crystal with a gap between the second and third lowest bands, which is characterized by the nontrivial glide-Z_2 topological invariant that can be determined by symmetry-based indicators. We show that under the space group No. 230 (Ia-3d), the topological invariant is equal to half of the number of photonic bands below the gap, and therefore, the band gap between the second and third lowest bands is always topologically nontrivial, and to realize the topological phase, we need to open a gap for the Dirac point at the P point by breaking time-reversal symmetry. With staggered magnetization, the photonic bands are gapped, and the photonic crystal becomes topological, whereas with uniform magnetization, a gap does not open, which can be attributed to the minimal band connectivity exceeding two in this case. By introducing the notion of Wyckoff positions, we show how the topological characteristics are determined from the structure of the photonic crystals.

Weyl points and line nodes in gapless gyroid photonic crystals

Controlled crystallization of BaF2 under two different kinds of monolayers, octadecylamine [CH3(CH2)(17)NH2] and hexadecanol [CH3(CH2)(14)CH2OH], has been studied by using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope. It was found that the monolayer headgroup, the degree of ionization of the headgroup, etc., had a complicated effect on the selectivity of monolayers for crystal and on the morphology and orientation of crystals grown under the compressed monolayers. At pH = 7.0, XRD analysis showed that (100)-oriented BaF2 crystals were formed under the octadecylamine monolayer, while several kinds of crystals were found under the hexadecanol monolayer. In comparison, at pH = 8.5, both (100)-oriented BaF2 and (111)-oriented Ba(NO3)(2) crystals were obtained under the monolayer of octadecylamine. However, crystals formed under hexadecanol monolayer consist of BaF2, Ba(NO3)(2), etc. The detailed mechanism for crystallization was discussed in terms of the specific interaction and lattice matching between the monolayer headgroup and the nucleating species.
