Comparative genomics of the bacterial genus Listeria : Genome evolution is characterized by limited gene acquisition and limited gene loss
Henk C. den Bakker,Craig Cummings,Vania Ferreira,Paolo Vatta,Renato H. Orsi,Lovorka Degoricija,Melissa Barker,Olga Petrauskene,Manohar R. Furtado,Martin Wiedmann +9 more
TL;DR: Limited gene loss in Listeria did include loss of virulence associated genes, likely associated with multiple transitions to a saprotrophic lifestyle, which will allow for the development of genetic and genomic criteria for pathogenic strains, including development of assays that specifically detect pathogenic Listersia strains.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genome sequencing reveals diversification of virulence factor content and possible host adaptation in distinct subpopulations of Salmonella enterica
Henk C. den Bakker,Andrea I. Moreno Switt,Gregory R. Govoni,Craig Cummings,M.L. Ranieri,Lovorka Degoricija,Karin Hoelzer,Lorraine D. Rodriguez-Rivera,Stephanie Brown,Elena Bolchacova,Manohar R. Furtado,Martin Wiedmann +11 more
TL;DR: The population structure of Salmonella enterica subsp.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparative Analysis of Genome Sequences Covering the Seven Cronobacter Species
Susan Joseph,Prerak T. Desai,Yongmei Ji,Craig Cummings,Rita Shih,Lovorka Degoricija,Alain Rico,Pius Brzoska,Stephen E. Hamby,Naqash Masood,Sumyya Hariri,Hana Sonbol,Nadia Chuzhanova,Michael McClelland,Manohar R. Furtado,Stephen J. Forsythe +15 more
TL;DR: C. sakazakii is unique in the Cronobacter genus in encoding genes enabling the utilization of exogenous sialic acid which may have clinical significance, and also suggested various degrees of divergence.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Whole-Genome Single Nucleotide Polymorphism-Based Approach To Trace and Identify Outbreaks Linked to a Common Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica Serovar Montevideo Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis Type
Henk C. den Bakker,Andrea I. Moreno Switt,Craig Cummings,Karin Hoelzer,Lovorka Degoricija,Lorraine D. Rodriguez-Rivera,Emily M. Wright,Rixun Fang,Margaret A. Davis,Tim Root,Dianna Schoonmaker-Bopp,Kimberlee A. Musser,Elizabeth Villamil,HaeNa Waechter,Laura Kornstein,Manohar R. Furtado,Martin Wiedmann +16 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that only a very small percentage of the human isolates with the outbreak PFGE pattern and obtained during the outbreak period could be attributed to the actual pepper-related outbreak, while the majority of the putative cases represented background cases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hydrogels for osteochondral repair based on photocrosslinkable carbamate dendrimers.
Lovorka Degoricija,Prashant N. Bansal,Prashant N. Bansal,Serge H. M. Söntjens,Neel Joshi,Masaya Takahashi,Brian D. Snyder,Mark W. Grinstaff +7 more
TL;DR: Good mechanical properties, low swelling, good attachment to the defect site, and positive in vivo results illustrate the potential of these dendrimer-based hydrogels as scaffolds for osteochondral defect repair.
