Journal ArticleDOI

The frequency and characteristics of highly thermophilic bacteria in cool soil environments

TL;DR: Biochemical testing of five strains reveals a significant ability to utilize alkanes and some aromatic hydrocarbons and the question is raised of how these organisms, which are apparently unable to grow at the temperatures experienced in these cool soils, are so prominent.

MIDTAL: Microarrays for the Detection of Toxic Algae.

TL;DR: The purpose of MIDTAL is to support the common fisheries policy and to aid the national monitoring agencies by providing new rapid tools for the identification of toxic algae and their toxins so they can comply with EU directive 91/1491/CEE to monitor for toxic algae, and reduce the need for the mouse bioassay.
Journal ArticleDOI

The prevalence and distribution of Alaria alata, a potential zoonotic parasite, in foxes in Ireland.

TL;DR: The results of the spatial analysis suggest that A. alata may have a limited distribution being confined mainly to areas of pasture especially in the central plain and north Munster, and that the level of parasitism was greatest in foxes from those areas where the prevalence of infection was highest.
