Complications of Mechanical Ventilation — The CDC's New Surveillance Paradigm
TL;DR: New CDC surveillance definitions for ventilated patients aim both to broaden the focus of surveillance beyond pneumonia to include other common complications and to increase objectivity to facilitate automation, improve comparability, and minimize gaming.
Journal ArticleDOI
Toward Improved Surveillance: The Impact of Ventilator-Associated Complications on Length of Stay and Antibiotic Use in Patients in Intensive Care Units
Yoshiro Hayashi,Kenichiro Morisawa,Michael Klompas,Michael Klompas,Mark Jones,Hiran Bandeshe,Robert J. Boots,Jeffrey Lipman,David L. Paterson,David L. Paterson +9 more
TL;DR: VAC events were associated with significantly increased ICU length of stay, duration of mechanical ventilation, and consumption of broad-spectrum antibiotics but not with longer hospital stays or ICU mortality, suggesting VAC may be a useful surveillance tool.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Clinical Impact and Preventability of Ventilator-Associated Conditions in Critically Ill Patients Who Are Mechanically Ventilated
John Muscedere,Tasnim Sinuff,Daren K. Heyland,Peter Dodek,Sean P. Keenan,Sean P. Keenan,Gordon Wood,Xuran Jiang,Andrew G. Day,Denny Laporta,Michael Klompas,Michael Klompas +11 more
TL;DR: Although the agreement between VAC, iVAC, and VAP is poor, a higher adoption of measures to prevent VAP was associated with lower VAP and VAC rates and increased concordance with VAP prevention guidelines during the study.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: The 2014 updates to the Compendium were created to provide acute care hospitals with up-to-date, practical, expert guidance to assist in prioritizing and implementing their HAI prevention efforts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of trends in sepsis incidence and coding using administrative claims versus objective clinical data
Chanu Rhee,Chanu Rhee,Michael V. Murphy,Lingling Li,Richard Platt,Michael Klompas,Michael Klompas +6 more
TL;DR: Coding for sepsis has become more inclusive, and septicemia diagnoses are increasingly being applied to patients without positive blood cultures, which likely explain some of the apparent rise in sepsi incidence and underscore the need for more reliable surveillance methods.
