Wiedensohler,Frank Raes +38 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors synthesize data on aerosol (particulate matter, PM) physical and chemical characteristics, which were obtained over the past decade in aerosol research and monitoring activities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Metal-rich ambient particles (particulate Matter2.5) cause airway inflammation in healthy subjects
Frank Schaumann,Paul J. A. Borm,Andreas Herbrich,Johannes Knoch,Mike Pitz,Roel P. F. Schins,Birgit Luettig,Jens M. Hohlfeld,Joachim Heinrich,Norbert Krug +9 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that environmentally relevant concentrations of PM(2.5) from the smelter area induced distinct airway inflammation in healthy subjects with a selective influx of monocytes and increased generation of oxidant radicals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Daily mortality and particulate matter in different size classes in Erfurt, Germany
Matthias Stölzel,Susanne Breitner,Josef Cyrys,Mike Pitz,Gabriele Wölke,Wolfgang G. Kreyling,Joachim Heinrich,H-Erich Wichmann,Annette Peters +8 more
TL;DR: This study shows that UFP, representing fresh combustion particles, may be an important component of urban air pollution associated with health effects and found statistically significant associations between elevated ultrafine particle (UFP) NC and total as well as cardio-respiratory mortality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hydroxyl radical generation by electron paramagnetic resonance as a new method to monitor ambient particulate matter composition
Tingming Shi,Roel P. F. Schins,Ad M. Knaapen,Thomas A. J. Kuhlbusch,Mike Pitz,Joachim Heinrich,Paul J. A. Borm +6 more
TL;DR: A method, using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), to measure OH* radical formation in suspensions of particles in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) as a specific spin-trap is developed to provide a better understanding of the effect of small variations in mass concentrations on health.
