Since its discovery, the asymmetric Fano resonance has been a characteristic feature of interacting quantum systems. The shape of this resonance is distinctively different from that of conventional symmetric resonance curves. Recently, the Fano resonance has been found in plasmonic nanoparticles, photonic crystals, and electromagnetic metamaterials. The steep dispersion of the Fano resonance profile promises applications in sensors, lasing, switching, and nonlinear and slow-light devices.

New methods for laser cleaning of nanoparticles

Directional emission source is one of the key components for multiple-view three-dimensional display. It is hard to achieve high efficiency and large deflection angle direction sources via geometric optics due to the weak confinement of light. The metasurface especially metagrating provides a promising method to control light effectively. However, the conventional forward design methods for metasurface are inherently limited by insufficient control of Bloch modes, which causes a significant efficiency drop at a large deflection angle. Here, we obtained high efficiency large deflection angle metagratings by realizing the constructive interferences among the propagation Bloch modes and enhancing the outcoupling effect at the desired diffraction order. The grating structures that support the coupling of Bloch modes were designed by an inverse design method for different incident wavelengths, and the total phase response of a supercell can be tailored. For a red (620 nm) incident light, the theoretical deflection efficiency of a silicon metagrating can be higher than 80% from 30° to 80°. The experimental deflection efficiency can achieve 86.43% for a 75° deflection metagrating. The matched simulation and experimental results strongly support the reliability of developed algorithm. Our inverse design approach could be extended to the green (530 nm) and blue (460 nm) incident light with titanium dioxide metagratings, with theoretical deflection efficiency of over 80% in a large deflection angle range of 30° to 80°. Considering the multiple visible wavelength deflection capability, the developed algorithm can be potentially applied for full color three-dimensional display, and other functional metagrating devices based on different dielectric materials.

Realization of inversely designed metagrating for highly efficient large angle beam deflection.

Laser beam, electron beam & focused ion beam are attracting much research interests in functional nanostructure fabrication. Laser irradiation under near field is one of the effective ways to break light diffraction limit and push patterning feature size down to dozens of nanometers. In this paper, nano-hole array patterning by a parallel particle mask is described. Transparent nanoparticles were self-assembled on phase change GST thin film surfaces. Following with the pulsed laser irradiation, nano-hole arrays were formed uniformly on the surfaces. Laser fluence effect and angle dependence of the nanostructures are investigated. Physics behind this laser nanostructuring shows that these transparent nanoparticles serve as “nano-lenses” to induce light intensity enhancement under the transparent particles. Theoretical simulations indicates that light intensity enhancement is related to particle size and light wavelength. To extend this technique application, the feasibility of laser nanoimprinting for next generation nanodevice fabrication is also studied.

From Transparent Particle Light Enhancement to Laser Nanoimprinting

Audible acoustic waves generated during laser interaction with Al surface are studied, to monitor the interaction and to reflect the nature of interactions such as laser ablation and surface cleaning. The fast Fourier transform spectral analysis method was used to study the acoustic wave generation and to establish a relationship between the acoustic waves and laser ablation rate or cleaning efficiency.

Surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a highly sensitive and selective vibrational spectroscopy, which has promising application in diabetes detection. However, the current detection methods usually suffer from poor reproducibility, time‐consumption, and complicated fabrication procedures, which limit their practical applications for large‐scale diabetes screening. Herein, a one‐step laser fabrication method to realize the integration of SERS and surface‐enhanced fluorescence (SEF) is introduced for rapid detection of glucose by generating controllable hierarchical laser‐induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on Si substrate. The proposed dual‐modal detection is to use SEF for first rapid qualitative analysis, and to apply SERS for later quantitative analysis of the glucose concentration. The SERS and SEF enhancement is up to 2.11 × 106 and 24.83, respectively, while the detection limit of SERS and SEF is × 10−9 and 1 × 10−6 mol L−1, respectively. Moreover, clinical verification of this dual‐modal detection of glucose in human blood samples is investigated, and the results are in good agreement with the clinical report. The present SERS‐SEF dual‐modal detection provides a facile and promising method for large‐scale diabetes screening.
