Journal ArticleDOI
Serum S100B and antioxidant enzymes in bipolar patients
Ana Cristina Andreazza,Carina Cassini,Adriane R. Rosa,Marina Concli Leite,Lúcia Maria Vieira de Almeida,Patrı´cia Nardin,Angelo B.N. Cunha,Keila Maria Mendes Ceresér,Aida Santin,Carmem Gottfried,Mirian Salvador,Flávio Kapczinski,Carlos Alberto Gonçalves +12 more
TL;DR: A peripheral oxidative imbalance indicates that systemic changes are taking place during the active phases of the illness, as indicated by serum S100B elevation, which appears to relate to astrocyte function.
Journal ArticleDOI
Oxidative stress parameters in unmedicated and treated bipolar subjects during initial manic episode: a possible role for lithium antioxidant effects.
Rodrigo Machado-Vieira,Ana Cristina Andreazza,Carlos Ivan Viale,Vanessa Cassina Zanatto,Victor Hermes Cereser,Rafael da Silva Vargas,Flávio Kapczinski,Luiz Valmor Portela,Diogo O. Souza,Mirian Salvador,Valentim Gentil +10 more
TL;DR: Results suggest that initial manic episodes are associated with both increased oxidative stress parameters and activated antioxidant defenses, which may be related to dysfunctions on energy metabolism and neuroplasticity pathways.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antioxidant activity of the flavonoid hesperidin in chemical and biological systems.
TL;DR: Observations clearly demonstrate that hesperidin provides strong cellular antioxidant protection against the damaging effects induced by paraquat and peroxide hydrogen.
Journal ArticleDOI
Elevated serum superoxide dismutase and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in different phases of bipolar disorder and in schizophrenia
Maurício Kunz,Clarissa Severino Gama,Ana Cristina Andreazza,Mirian Salvador,Keila Mendes Ceresér,Fabiano Alves Gomes,Paulo Belmonte-de-Abreu,Michael Berk,Michael Berk,Flávio Kapczinski +9 more
TL;DR: The findings show increased SOD activity in SZ, as well as in depressed and manic bipolar patients, but not in euthymic BD subjects, which suggests a dysregulation in oxidative defenses in both disorders.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phenolic content and antioxidant activities of white and purple juices manufactured with organically- or conventionally-produced grapes.
Caroline Dani,Lívia S. Oliboni,Regina Vanderlinde,Diego Bonatto,Mirian Salvador,João Antonio Pêgas Henriques +5 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that white and purple grape juices can be used as antioxidants and nutritional sources and in vitro antioxidant activity as compared to white juices.
