Journal ArticleDOI
The global distribution and burden of dengue
Samir Bhatt,Peter W. Gething,Oliver J. Brady,Jane P. Messina,Andrew Farlow,Catherine L. Moyes,John M. Drake,John M. Drake,John S. Brownstein,Anne G. Hoen,Osman Sankoh,Osman Sankoh,Monica F. Myers,Dylan B. George,Thomas Jaenisch,G. R. William Wint,Cameron P. Simmons,Thomas W. Scott,Thomas W. Scott,Jeremy Farrar,Jeremy Farrar,Simon I. Hay,Simon I. Hay +22 more
TL;DR: These new risk maps and infection estimates provide novel insights into the global, regional and national public health burden imposed by dengue and will help to guide improvements in disease control strategies using vaccine, drug and vector control methods, and in their economic evaluation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Climate and Satellite Indicators to Forecast Rift Valley Fever Epidemics in Kenya
Kenneth J. Linthicum,Assaf Anyamba,Compton J. Tucker,Patrick W. Kelley,Monica F. Myers,Clarence J. Peters +5 more
TL;DR: Analysis of this record and Pacific and Indian Ocean sea surface temperature anomalies, coupled with satellite normalized difference vegetation index data, shows that prediction of Rift Valley fever outbreaks may be made up to 5 months in advance of outbreaks in East Africa.
Journal ArticleDOI
A long neglected world malaria map: Plasmodium vivax endemicity in 2010.
Peter W. Gething,Iqbal R. F. Elyazar,Catherine L. Moyes,David L. Smith,David L. Smith,Katherine E. Battle,Carlos A Guerra,Anand P. Patil,Andrew J. Tatem,Andrew J. Tatem,Rosalind E. Howes,Monica F. Myers,Dylan B. George,Peter Horby,Heiman F. L. Wertheim,Ric N. Price,Ric N. Price,Ivo Mueller,J. Kevin Baird,Simon I. Hay,Simon I. Hay +20 more
TL;DR: This first systematic effort to map the global endemicity of Plasmodium vivax is presented, intended to contribute to a much-needed paradigm shift towards geographically stratified and evidence-based planning for P. v Vivax control and elimination.
Journal ArticleDOI
Climate change and the resurgence of malaria in the East African highlands.
Simon I. Hay,Simon I. Hay,Jonathan Cox,David J. Rogers,Sarah E. Randolph,David I. Stern,G.D. Shanks,Monica F. Myers,Robert W. Snow,Robert W. Snow +9 more
TL;DR: Temperature, rainfall, vapour pressure and the number of months suitable for P. falciparum transmission have not changed significantly during the past century or during the period of reported malaria resurgence, suggesting claimed associations between local malaria resurgences and regional changes in climate are overly simplistic.
Journal ArticleDOI
Etiology of interepidemic periods of mosquito-borne disease
Simon I. Hay,Monica F. Myers,Donald S. Burke,D W Vaughn,Timothy P. Endy,N Ananda,G D Shanks,Robert W. Snow,Robert W. Snow,David J. Rogers +9 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that intrinsic population dynamics offer the most parsimonious explanation for the observed interepidemic periods of disease in dengue hemorrhagic fever and Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Bangkok and western Kenya.
