Independent Emergence of Artemisinin Resistance Mutations Among Plasmodium falciparum in Southeast Asia
Shannon Takala-Harrison,Christopher G Jacob,Cesar Arze,Michael P. Cummings,Joana C. Silva,Arjen M. Dondorp,Mark M. Fukuda,Tran Tinh Hien,Mayfong Mayxay,Mayfong Mayxay,Mayfong Mayxay,Harald Noedl,François Nosten,Myat Phone Kyaw,Nguyen Thanh Thuy Nhien,Mallika Imwong,Delia Bethell,Youry Se,Chanthap Lon,Stuart D. Tyner,David L. Saunders,Frédéric Ariey,Odile Mercereau-Puijalon,Didier Menard,Paul N. Newton,Paul N. Newton,Maniphone Khanthavong,Bouasy Hongvanthong,Peter Starzengruber,Hans-Peter Fuehrer,Paul Swoboda,Wasif A. Khan,Aung Pyae Phyo,Myaing Myaing Nyunt,Myat Htut Nyunt,Tyler S. Brown,Matthew Adams,Christopher S. Pepin,Jason A. Bailey,John C. Tan,Michael T. Ferdig,Taane G. Clark,Olivo Miotto,Bronwyn MacInnis,Dominic P. Kwiatkowski,Nicholas J. White,Pascal Ringwald,Christopher V. Plowe +47 more
TL;DR: While there was some evidence of spreading resistance, there was no evidence of resistance moving westward from Cambodia into Myanmar, and K13 appears to be a major determinant of artemisinin resistance throughout Southeast Asia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reduced Susceptibility of Plasmodium falciparum to Artesunate in Southern Myanmar
Myat Phone Kyaw,Myat Htut Nyunt,Khin Chit,Moe Myat Aye,Kyin Hla Aye,Niklas Lindegardh,Niklas Lindegardh,Joel Tarning,Joel Tarning,Mallika Imwong,Christopher G Jacob,Charlotte Rasmussen,Jamie Perin,Pascal Ringwald,Myaing M. Nyunt,Myaing M. Nyunt +15 more
TL;DR: A subset of P. falciparum infections in southern Myanmar displayed markedly delayed clearance following artemisinin treatment, suggesting either emergence of art Artemisinin resistance inSouthern Myanmar or spread to this location from its site of origin in western Cambodia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular Assessment of Artemisinin Resistance Markers, Polymorphisms in the K13 Propeller, and a Multidrug-Resistance Gene in the Eastern and Western Border Areas of Myanmar
Myat Htut Nyunt,Thaung Hlaing,Htet Wai Oo,Lu-Lu Kyaw Tin-Oo,Hnin Phyu Phway,Bo Wang,Ni Ni Zaw,Soe Soe Han,Thurein Tun,Kyaw Kyaw San,Myat Phone Kyaw,Eun-Taek Han +11 more
TL;DR: The low prevalence of K13 mutations and the absence of day 3 parasitaemic cases indicate that artemisinin resistance may not have spread to the western Myanmar border region.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification of a reticulocyte-specific binding domain of Plasmodium vivax reticulocyte-binding protein 1 that is homologous to the PfRh4 erythrocyte-binding domain
Jin-Hee Han,Seong-Kyun Lee,Bo Wang,Bo Wang,Fauzi Muh,Myat Htut Nyunt,Sunghun Na,Kwon-Soo Ha,Seok-Ho Hong,Won Sun Park,Jetsumon Sattabongkot,Takafumi Tsuboi,Eun-Taek Han +12 more
TL;DR: The reticulocyte-specific binding activities of PvRBP1a and 1b were significantly higher than normocyte binding activity and were significantly reduced by chymotrypsin treatment, suggesting that these ligands may have an important role in P. vivax merozoite invasion.
Journal ArticleDOI
Challenges in universal coverage and utilization of insecticide-treated bed nets in migrant plantation workers in Myanmar.
Myat Htut Nyunt,Khin Myo Aye,Myat Phone Kyaw,Thar Tun Kyaw,Thaung Hlaing,Kyaw Oo,Ni Ni Zaw,Thin Thin Aye,Nechi A San +8 more
TL;DR: There should be efforts to improve effective utilization of ITNs by continuous mass free distribution, durability monitoring, surveillance of insecticide resistance of the vector and behaviour change interventions in migrant plantation workers.
