TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the K13-propeller sequence polymorphism in 14,037 samples collected in 59 countries in which malaria is endemic and identified 108 nonsynonymous K13 mutations, which showed marked geographic disparity in their frequency and distribution.
Journal ArticleDOI
Imaging of Plasmodium Liver Stages to Drive Next-Generation Antimalarial Drug Discovery

TL;DR: An imidazolopiperazine scaffold series was identified that was highly enriched among compounds active against Plasmodium liver stages and shows potent in vivo blood-stage therapeutic activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Detection of Four Plasmodium Species by Genus- and Species-Specific Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification for Clinical Diagnosis
Eun-Taek Han,Risa Watanabe,Jetsumon Sattabongkot,Benjawan Khuntirat,Jeeraphat Sirichaisinthop,Hideyuki Iriko,Ling Jin,Satoru Takeo,Takafumi Tsuboi +8 more
TL;DR: Loop-mediated isothermal amplification, a novel nucleic acid amplification method, was developed for the clinical detection of four species of human malaria parasites and may provide a simple and reliable test for routine screening for malaria parasites in both clinical laboratories and malaria clinics in areas where malaria is endemic.
Journal ArticleDOI
Circumsporozoite protein heterogeneity in the human malaria parasite Plasmodium vivax
Ronald Rosenberg,Robert A. Wirtz,David E. Lanar,Jetsumon Sattabongkot,Ted Hall,Andrew P. Waters,Chusak Prasittisuk +6 more
TL;DR: Phenotypic heterogeneity in the repetitive portion of a human malaria circumsporozoite (CS) protein, a major target of candidate vaccines, has been found and implies that a P. vivax vaccine based on the CS protein repeat of one isolate will not be universally protective.
Journal ArticleDOI
Malaria in the Greater Mekong Subregion: Heterogeneity and complexity
Liwang Cui,Guiyun Yan,Guiyun Yan,Jetsumon Sattabongkot,Yaming Cao,Bin Chen,Xiao-Guang Chen,Qi Fan,Qiang Fang,Somchai Jongwutiwes,Daniel M. Parker,Jeeraphat Sirichaisinthop,Myat Phone Kyaw,Xin-zhuan Su,Henglin Yang,Zhaoqing Yang,Baomin Wang,Jianwei Xu,Bin Zheng,Daibin Zhong,Guofa Zhou +20 more
TL;DR: The changing malaria epidemiology in the GMS is reviewed, the vector systems and patterns of malaria transmission are analyzed, and the major challenges the malaria control community faces on its way to malaria elimination are identified.
