Stressful events, personality, and mood disturbance: Gender differences in alcoholics and problem drinkers
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined relationships among stressful events, personality characteristics, and affective status in males and females of various alcohol drinking patterns, and found that female alcoholics reported significantly greater depression, anxiety, and neuroticism compared to their male counterparts.

Altered cortisol response in sober alcoholics: An examination of contributing factors
TL;DR: Results indicate decreased adrenocortical response to biobehavioral stress in alcoholics abstinent up to four weeks, higher stress cortisol values were seen in the patients with the most severe withdrawal symptoms.
