Increase in Expression of the Copper Transporter ATP7A during Platinum Drug-Based Treatment Is Associated with Poor Survival in Ovarian Cancer Patients
Goli Samimi,Nissi Varki,Sharon P. Wilczynski,Roohangiz Safaei,David S. Alberts,Stephen B. Howell +5 more
TL;DR: Enrichment of the tumor for ATP7A-expressing cells during platinum drug-based treatment of ovarian cancers is associated with poor survival, and these findings are in agreement with results of in vitro studies demonstrating that increased expression of ATP6A renders cells resistant to cisplatin and carboplatin.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sensitive and Specific Detection of the Non-Human Sialic Acid N-Glycolylneuraminic Acid In Human Tissues and Biotherapeutic Products
Sandra Diaz,Vered Padler-Karavani,Darius Ghaderi,Nancy Hurtado-Ziola,Hai Yu,Xi Chen,Els C. M. Brinkman-Van der Linden,Ajit Varki,Nissi Varki +8 more
TL;DR: A reliable antibody-based method for highly sensitive and specific detection of the non-human sialic acid Neu5Gc in human tissues and biotherapeutic products that has not been previously described is reported.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tumor infiltrating B-cells are increased in prostate cancer tissue.
Jason Woo,Michael A. Liss,Michelle Muldong,Kerrin Palazzi,Amy Strasner,Massimo Ammirante,Nissi Varki,Ahmed Shabaik,Stephen H. Howell,Christopher J. Kane,Michael Karin,Christina Jamieson +11 more
TL;DR: New method to measure B-cells using computer-assisted digitized image analysis shows that higher B-cell infiltration was present within the intra-tumoral PCa regions compared to the extra-Tumoral benign prostate tissue regions in prostatectomy sections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Calcium-dependent oligonucleotide antagonists specific for L-selectin.
Dan O'connell,Andrea Koenig,Susan Jennings,Brian Hicke,Hui-Ling Han,Tim Fitzwater,Ying-Fon Chang,Nissi Varki,David Parma,Ajit Varki +9 more
TL;DR: The SELEX (systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment) process uses combinatorial chemistry and in vitro selection to yield high affinity oligonucleotides with unexpected binding specificities as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Modeling human congenital disorder of glycosylation type IIa in the mouse: conservation of asparagine-linked glycan-dependent functions in mammalian physiology and insights into disease pathogenesis
Yan Wang,Jenny Tan,Mark Sutton-Smith,David Ditto,Maria Panico,Robert M. Campbell,Nissi Varki,Jeffrey M. Long,Jaak Jaeken,Simon R. Levinson,Anthony Wynshaw-Boris,Howard R. Morris,Dzung T. Le,Anne Dell,Harry Schachter,Jamey D. Marth +15 more
TL;DR: It is indicated that human genetic disease due to aberrant protein glycosylation can be modeled in the mouse to gain insights into N-glycan-dependent physiology and the pathogenesis of CDG-IIa.
