DeepPhase: Surgical Phase Recognition in CATARACTS Videos
Odysseas Zisimopoulos,Evangello Flouty,Imanol Luengo,Petros Giataganas,Jean Nehme,Andre Chow,Danail Stoyanov +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors adopt a deep learning paradigm to detect surgical instruments in cataract surgery videos which in turn feed a surgical phase inference recurrent network that encodes temporal aspects of phase steps within the phase classification.
Journal ArticleDOI
CATARACTS: Challenge on automatic tool annotation for cataRACT surgery
Hassan Al Hajj,Mathieu Lamard,Pierre-Henri Conze,Soumali Roychowdhury,Xiaowei Hu,Gabija Maršalkaitė,Odysseas Zisimopoulos,Muneer Ahmad Dedmari,Fenqiang Zhao,Jonas Prellberg,Manish Sahu,Adrian Galdran,Teresa Araújo,Duc My Vo,Chandan Panda,Navdeep Dahiya,Satoshi Kondo,Zhengbing Bian,Arash Vahdat,Jonas Bialopetravičius,Evangello Flouty,Chenhui Qiu,Sabrina Dill,Anirban Mukhopadhyay,Pedro Alves Costa,Guilherme Aresta,Senthil Ramamurthy,Sang-Woong Lee,Aurélio Campilho,Stefan Zachow,Shunren Xia,Sailesh Conjeti,Danail Stoyanov,Jogundas Armaitis,Pheng-Ann Heng,William G. Macready,Béatrice Cochener,Gwenole Quellec +37 more
TL;DR: Evaluating tool annotation algorithms based on deep learning for cataract surgery finds that the quality of their annotations are compared to that of human interpretations, and it is expected that they will guide the design of efficient surgery monitoring tools in the near future.
Journal ArticleDOI
Towards a Computed-Aided Diagnosis System in Colonoscopy: Automatic Polyp Segmentation Using Convolution Neural Networks
Patrick Brandao,Odysseas Zisimopoulos,Evangelos B. Mazomenos,Gastone Ciuti,Jorge Bernal,Marco Visentini-Scarzanella,Arianna Menciassi,Paolo Dario,Anastasios Koulaouzidis,Alberto Arezzo,David J. Hawkes,Danail Stoyanov +11 more
TL;DR: Capsule endoscopic imaging with robotic actuation can be a valuable diagnostic tool for bowel cancers including colorectal cancer (CRC) and may provide real-time information about lesionigenicity and prognosis.

Journal ArticleDOI
Can surgical simulation be used to train detection and classification of neural networks
Odysseas Zisimopoulos,Evangello Flouty,Mark Stacey,Sam Muscroft,Petros Giataganas,Jean Nehme,Andre Chow,Danail Stoyanov +7 more
TL;DR: This is the first attempt to train deep learning models for surgical instrument detection on simulated data while demonstrating promising results to generalise on real data and indicates that simulated data does have some potential for training advanced classification methods for CAI systems.
