Adaptation to flood risk: Results of international paired flood event studies
Heidi Kreibich,Giuliano Di Baldassarre,Sergiy Vorogushyn,Jeroen C. J. H. Aerts,Heiko Apel,Giuseppe Tito Aronica,Karsten Arnbjerg-Nielsen,Laurens M. Bouwer,Philip Bubeck,Tommaso Caloiero,Do Thi Chinh,Maria Cortès,Animesh K. Gain,Vincenzo Giampa,Christian Kuhlicke,Zbigniew W. Kundzewicz,Maria Carmen Llasat,Johanna Mård,Piotr Matczak,Maurizio Mazzoleni,Daniela Molinari,Nguyen Viet Dung,Olga Petrucci,Kai Schröter,Kymo Slager,Annegret H. Thieken,Philip J. Ward,Bruno Merz +27 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed eight paired floods, that is, consecutive flood events that occurred in the same region, with the second flood causing significantly lower damage, and found that lower damage caused by the second event was mainly due to significant reductions in vulnerability, for example, via raised risk awareness, preparedness, and improvements of organizational emergency management.
Journal ArticleDOI
Towards a database on societal impact of Mediterranean floods within the framework of the HYMEX project
Maria Carmen Llasat,Montserrat Llasat-Botija,Olga Petrucci,Angela Aurora Pasqua,Joan Rosselló,Freddy Vinet,L. Boissier +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a new flood database that is being developed within the framework of HYMEX project is presented, focusing on four regions representative of the NW sector of Mediterranean Europe: Catalonia, Spain, the Balearic Islands, Spain; Calabria, Italy; and Languedoc-Roussillon, Midi-Pyrenees and PACA, France.
Journal ArticleDOI
Gender, age and circumstances analysis of flood and landslide fatalities in Italy
TL;DR: In Italy males are more vulnerable to floods and landslides for most of the age categories, and the over-representation of males compared to the females, both for landslide and flood is statistically significant and does not vary in time, indicating a different propensity towards the risk taking and a different degree of exposure between males and females.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessing future changes in the occurrence of rainfall-induced landslides at a regional scale.
TL;DR: A method for the regional-scale evaluation of future variations in the occurrence of rainfall-induced landslides, in response to changes in rainfall regimes is proposed and can be applied in similar regions, where adequate landslide and rainfall information is available.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hess Opinions: An interdisciplinary research agenda to explore the unintended consequences of structural flood protection
Giuliano Di Baldassarre,Heidi Kreibich,Sergiy Vorogushyn,Jeroen C. J. H. Aerts,Karsten Arnbjerg-Nielsen,Marlies Barendrecht,Paul D. Bates,Marco Borga,W. J. Wouter Botzen,W. J. Wouter Botzen,Philip Bubeck,Bruna De Marchi,Carmen Maria Llasat,Maurizio Mazzoleni,Daniela Molinari,Elena Mondino,Johanna Mård,Olga Petrucci,Anna Scolobig,Alberto Viglione,Philip J. Ward +20 more
TL;DR: In this article, an interdisciplinary research agenda is proposed to uncover the paradoxical dynamics of risk, such as the safe development paradox or safety dilemma, in the context of structural flood protection.
