TL;DR: Improved accelerator mass spectrometry 14C techniques are applied to construct robust chronologies from 40 key Mousterian and Neanderthal archaeological sites, showing that there was ample time for the transmission of cultural and symbolic behaviours, as well as possible genetic exchanges, between the two groups.
Journal ArticleDOI
The origin of European cattle: evidence from modern and ancient DNA.
Albano Beja-Pereira,David Caramelli,Carles Lalueza-Fox,Cristiano Vernesi,Nuno Ferrand,Antonella Casoli,Félix Goyache,Luis J. Royo,Serena Conti,Martina Lari,Andrea Martini,Lahousine Ouragh,Ayed Magid,Abdulkarim Atash,Attila Zsolnai,Paolo Boscato,Costas Triantaphylidis,Konstantoula Ploumi,Luca Sineo,Francesco Mallegni,Pierre Taberlet,Georg Erhardt,Lourdes Sampietro,Jaume Bertranpetit,Guido Barbujani,Gordon Luikart,Giorgio Bertorelle +26 more
TL;DR: Previously undescribed genetic evidence is presented in contrast with this view based on mtDNA sequences from five Italian aurochsen dated between 7,000 and 17,000 years B.P. and >1,000 modern cattle from 51 breeds to suggest the European cattle may represent a more variable and valuable genetic resource than previously realized.
Journal ArticleDOI

Katerina Douka,Thomas Higham,Rachel Wood,Rachel Wood,Paolo Boscato,Paolo Gambassini,Panagiotis Karkanas,Marco Peresani,Annamaria Ronchitelli +8 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that the Uluzzian arrived in Italy and Greece shortly before 45,000 years ago and its final stages are placed at ∼39,500 years ago, its end synchronous with the Campanian Ignimbrite eruption.
Journal ArticleDOI
Testing the ABOx-SC method: Dating known-age charcoals associated with the Campanian Ignimbrite
Rachel Wood,Rachel Wood,Katerina Douka,Paolo Boscato,Paul Haesaerts,A.A. Sinitsyn,Thomas Higham +6 more
TL;DR: De Vivo et al. as discussed by the authors used acid base oxidation-stopped combustion (ABOx-SC) to date the Campanian Ignimbrite (CI) tephra layer.
