TOPICAL REVIEW: Applications of magnetic nanoparticles in biomedicine

The physical principles underlying some current biomedical applications of magnetic nanoparticles are reviewed. Starting from well-known basic concepts, and drawing on examples from biology and biomedicine, the relevant physics of magnetic materials and their responses to applied magnetic fields are surveyed. The way these properties are controlled and used is illustrated with reference to (i) magnetic separation of labelled cells and other biological entities; (ii) therapeutic drug, gene and radionuclide delivery; (iii) radio frequency methods for the catabolism of tumours via hyperthermia; and (iv) contrast enhancement agents for magnetic resonance imaging applications. Future prospects are also discussed.

The effect of gamma-radiation on the magnetization of the kerosene based ferrofluid

The structuralization of magnetic particles after illumination was experimentally observed in two types of a magnetic fluid based on mineral oil with the magnetite particles covered by monolayer surfactant and kerosene-based magnetic fluid sterically stabilized by a double layer consisting of oleic acid and dodecylbenzensulphonic acid (DBS). This contribution presents a detailed theoretical description of the thermodiffusion process in magnetic fluids, simulation of the structuralization in magnetic fluid with a negative Soret constant, and confirmaton of the negative value of this constant for a kerosene-based magnetic fluid.

Structuralization induced by the photothermal effect in magnetic fluid film

Chemically synthesized magnetite particles coated by sodium oleate and PEG (MNP), and magnetosomes (MS) influence the process of phagocytosis and the metabolic activity (lysozyme and peroxidase activity) in leukocytes. Lysozyme activity is oxygen‐independent liquidation mechanisms of engulfed microorganism, peroxidase activity is an oxygen‐dependent mechanism. Both tested types of nanoparticles lysed leukocyte cells during incubation. MNP at concentrations of 10 and 20 μg/mL lysed almost all leukocytes and their cell viability was in the 14±0.05% range. On the other hand MS begin to influence leukocytes activity at the concentration of 1 μg/ml and this influence grows with increasing concentration up to 20 μg/ml. MS are more suitable for biological applications than MNP which are more aggressive material than MS. MS should not be used above 10 μg/mL.
