Journal ArticleDOI

Worldwide Prevalence and Burden of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders, Results of Rome Foundation Global Study.

Ami D. Sperber, +48 more
- 01 Jan 2021 -
TL;DR: It is found that more than 40% of persons worldwide have FGIDs, which affect quality of life and healthcare use, and similar trends and relative distributions were found in people who completed internet vs personal interviews.
Journal ArticleDOI

Rectal distention testing in patients with irritable bowel syndrome: Sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of pain sensory thresholds

TL;DR: Lowered rectal pain threshold is a hallmark of IBS patients and rectal barostat testing is useful to confirm the diagnosis ofIBS and to discriminate IBS from other causes of abdominal pain.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ghrelin/motilin-related peptide is a potent prokinetic to reverse gastric postoperative ileus in rat.

TL;DR: Ghrelin/MTLRP accelerates the gastric emptying and small intestinal transit of a liquid meal and is a strong prokinetic agent capable of reversing the postoperative gastric ileus in rat.
Journal ArticleDOI

Widespread Hypersensitivity Is Related to Altered Pain Inhibition Processes in Irritable Bowel Syndrome

TL;DR: The relation between altered pain inhibition processes and widespread hypersensitivity in IBS confirms the relation between visceral hypersensitivity, cutaneous thermal sensitivity, and central pain mechanisms, and covariance analyses indicated that psychological factors accounted for group differences in visceral hypers sensitivity and pain inhibition deficits.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pain hypersensitivity in patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders: a gastrointestinal-specific defect or a general systemic condition?

TL;DR: It is suggested that patients with FGID may have hyperalgesia and low pain tolerance that is not limited to the viscera, but that is part of a systemic general condition.
