Direct In Vivo Assessment of Microcirculatory Dysfunction in Severe Falciparum Malaria
Arjen M. Dondorp,Arjen M. Dondorp,Can Ince,Prakaykaew Charunwatthana,Josh Hanson,A. van Kuijen,M. A. Faiz,M. R. Rahman,Mahtabuddin Hasan,E Bin Yunus,A. Ghose,Ronnatrai Ruangveerayut,Direk Limmathurotsakul,Keshen R. Mathura,Nicholas J. White,Nicholas J. White,N P Day,N P Day +17 more
TL;DR: Patients with severe falciparum malaria show extensive microvascular obstruction that is proportional to the severity of the disease, which underscores the prominent role that microVascular obstruction plays in the pathophysiology of severe malaria and illustrates the fundamental difference between the microv vascular pathophysiological of malaria and that of bacterial sepsis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Haemolysis in G6PD Heterozygous Females Treated with Primaquine for Plasmodium vivax Malaria: A Nested Cohort in a Trial of Radical Curative Regimens
Cindy S. Chu,Cindy S. Chu,Germana Bancone,Germana Bancone,Kerryn A. Moore,Kerryn A. Moore,Htun Htun Win,Niramon Thitipanawan,Christina Po,Nongnud Chowwiwat,Rattanaporn Raksapraidee,Pornpimon Wilairisak,Aung Pyae Phyo,Lily Keereecharoen,Stephane Proux,Prakaykaew Charunwatthana,François Nosten,François Nosten,Nicholas J. White,Nicholas J. White +19 more
TL;DR: Higher daily doses of primaquine have the potential to cause clinically significant haemolysis in G6PD heterozygous females who are reported as phenotypically normal with current point of care tests.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Simple Score to Predict the Outcome of Severe Malaria in Adults
Josh Hanson,Josh Hanson,Sue J. Lee,Sue J. Lee,Sanjib Mohanty,MA Faiz,Nicholas M. Anstey,Prakaykaew Charunwatthana,Emran Bin Yunus,Saroj K. Mishra,Emiliana Tjitra,Ric N. Price,Ric N. Day,Arjen M. Dondorp,Arjen M. Dondorp +26 more
TL;DR: Patients with a CAM score <2 at hospital admission may be safely treated in a general ward, provided that renal function can be monitored, and the model found that mortality increased steadily with increasing score.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characterization of G6PD genotypes and phenotypes on the northwestern Thailand-Myanmar border.
Germana Bancone,Cindy S. Chu,Raweewan Somsakchaicharoen,Nongnud Chowwiwat,Daniel M. Parker,Prakaykaew Charunwatthana,Nicholas J. White,François Nosten +7 more
TL;DR: The distribution and phenotypes of mutations causing G6PD deficiency in the male population of migrants and refugees in a malaria endemic region on the Thailand-Myanmar border were characterized in this article.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pharmacokinetic interactions between primaquine and chloroquine
Sasithon Pukrittayakamee,Joel Tarning,Podjanee Jittamala,Prakaykaew Charunwatthana,Saranath Lawpoolsri,Sue J. Lee,Sue J. Lee,Warunee Hanpithakpong,Warunee Hanpithakpong,Borimas Hanboonkunupakarn,Nicholas P. J. Day,Nicholas P. J. Day,Elizabeth A. Ashley,Elizabeth A. Ashley,Nicholas J. White +14 more
TL;DR: The coadministration of the two drugs did not affect chloroquine or desethylchloroquine pharmacokinetics but increased plasma primaquine concentrations significantly, which may explain previous observations of synergy in preventing P. vivax relapse.
