TL;DR: In this article, a systematic review included individual patient data from 14 randomised controlled trials with a total of 4211 participants and found no increased risk for all-cause mortality or treatment failure when procalcitonin was used to guide initiation and duration of antibiotic treatment in participants with acute respiratory infections compared to control participants.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of procalcitonin-guided antibiotic treatment on mortality in acute respiratory infections: a patient level meta-analysis

Girbes,Evelien de Jong,Matthias Briel,Matthias Briel,Matthias Briel,Beat Mueller +45 more
TL;DR: Widespread implementation of procalcitonin protocols in patients with acute respiratory infections has the potential to improve antibiotic management with positive effects on clinical outcomes and on the current threat of increasing antibiotic multiresistance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Procalcitonin-guided diagnosis and antibiotic stewardship revisited
TL;DR: A narrative review aims to update clinicians on the strengths and limitations of PCT for patient management, focusing on research conducted within the last 4 years.
Journal ArticleDOI
Are admission procalcitonin levels universal mortality predictors across different medical emergency patient populations? Results from the multi-national, prospective, observational TRIAGE study
Ramon Sager,Yannick Wirz,Devendra Amin,Adina Amin,Pierre Hausfater,Andreas Huber,Sebastian Haubitz,Alexander Kutz,Beat Mueller,Philipp Schuetz +9 more
TL;DR: In this large and heterogenous medical ED patient cohort, admission PCT was a strong and independent outcome predictor for 30-day mortality across different medical diagnoses independent of underlying infection.
Book ChapterDOI
Procalcitonin and Other Host-Response-Based Biomarkers for Evaluation of Infection and Guidance of Antimicrobial Treatment
TL;DR: Clinical trial data have shown that the host-response marker procalcitonin facilitates improved patient management given that its levels correlate with risk and severity of bacterial infections and can be used to guide therapeutic decisions pertaining to initiation and withdrawal of antimicrobial therapy.
