Journal ArticleDOI

Why measure osmotic adjustment

TL;DR: It now appears that turgor does not control cell expansion or stomatal conductance, and osmotic adjustment cannot affect yields except via other processes, the controls of which are almost entirely unexplored.
Journal ArticleDOI

Stomatal conductance as a screen for osmotic stress tolerance in durum wheat growing in saline soil

TL;DR: The results indicate that the relative size of the change in stomatal conductance when the salinity is introduced could be a means of screening for osmotic stress tolerance in wheat and other cereals.
Journal ArticleDOI

A Sodium Transporter (HKT7) Is a Candidate for Nax1, a Gene for Salt Tolerance in Durum Wheat

TL;DR: The expression pattern of TmHKT7-A2 was consistent with the physiological role of Nax1 in reducing Na+ concentration in leaf blades by retaining Na+ in the sheaths, and could control Na+ unloading from xylem in roots and sheaths.
Journal ArticleDOI

A locus for sodium exclusion (Nax1), a trait for salt tolerance, mapped in durum wheat

TL;DR: A novel source of salt tolerance in the form of a sodium exclusion trait, identified previously in a screen of tetraploid wheat germplasm, was mapped using a QTL approach and a microsatellite marker closely linked to the Nax1 locus was validated in genetically diverse backgrounds, and useful for marker-assisted selection in a durum wheat breeding program.
