The exceptional value of intact forest ecosystems
James E. M. Watson,James E. M. Watson,Tom Evans,Oscar Venter,Brooke Williams,Brooke Williams,Ayesha I. T. Tulloch,Ayesha I. T. Tulloch,Claire Louise Stewart,Ian D. Thompson,Justina C. Ray,Kris A. Murray,Alvaro Salazar,Clive McAlpine,Peter Potapov,Joe Walston,John G. Robinson,Michael Painter,David Wilkie,Christopher E. Filardi,William F. Laurance,Richard A. Houghton,Sean L. Maxwell,Hedley S. Grantham,Hedley S. Grantham,Cristián Samper,Stephanie Wang,Lars Laestadius,Rebecca K. Runting,Gustavo A. Silva-Chávez,Jamison Ervin,David B. Lindenmayer +31 more
TL;DR: It is argued that maintaining and, where possible, restoring the integrity of dwindling intact forests is an urgent priority for current global efforts to halt the ongoing biodiversity crisis, slow rapid climate change and achieve sustainability goals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Incorporating climate change into ecosystem service assessments and decisions: A review
Rebecca K. Runting,Brett A. Bryan,Laura E. Dee,Fleur J. F. Maseyk,Lisa Mandle,Perrine Hamel,Kerrie A. Wilson,Kathleen Yetka,Hugh P. Possingham,Jonathan R. Rhodes +9 more
TL;DR: The impact of climate change on most types of services was predominantly negative, but varied across services, drivers, and assessment methods, and although uncertainty was usually incorporated, there were substantial gaps in the sources of uncertainty included, along with the methods used to incorporate them.
Journal ArticleDOI
Risk-sensitive planning for conserving coral reefs under rapid climate change
Hawthorne L. Beyer,Hawthorne L. Beyer,Emma V. Kennedy,Maria Beger,Maria Beger,Chaolun Allen Chen,Chaolun Allen Chen,Joshua E. Cinner,Emily S. Darling,Emily S. Darling,C. Mark Eakin,Ruth D. Gates,Scott F. Heron,Scott F. Heron,Nancy Knowlton,David Obura,Stephen R. Palumbi,Hugh P. Possingham,Hugh P. Possingham,Hugh P. Possingham,Marji Puotinen,Rebecca K. Runting,William J. Skirving,Mark Spalding,Kerrie A. Wilson,Kerrie A. Wilson,Sally Wood,J. E. N. Veron,Ove Hoegh-Guldberg,Ove Hoegh-Guldberg +29 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors use Modern Portfolio Theory to identify coral reef locations globally that, in the absence of other impacts, are likely to have a heightened chance of surviving projected climate changes relative to other reefs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Integrating plant- and animal-based perspectives for more effective restoration of biodiversity
Clive McAlpine,Carla Catterall,Ralph Charles Mac Nally,David B. Lindenmayer,J. Leighton Reid,Karen D. Holl,Andrew F. Bennett,Rebecca K. Runting,Kerrie A. Wilson,Richard J. Hobbs,Leonie Seabrook,Shaun Cameron Cunningham,Atte Moilanen,Martine Maron,Luke P. Shoo,Ian D. Lunt,Peter A. Vesk,Libby Rumpff,Tara G. Martin,James Robertson Thomson,Hugh P. Possingham +20 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors highlight the need to strengthen collaboration between plant and animal ecologists, to overcome disciplinary and cultural differences, and to achieve a more unified approach to restoration ecology.
People’s perceptions about the importance of forests on Borneo
Erik Meijaard,Erik Meijaard,Nicola K. Abram,Jessie A. Wells,Anne-Sophie Pellier,Marc Ancrenaz,David L. A. Gaveau,Rebecca K. Runting,Kerrie Mengersen +8 more
TL;DR: This article found that forest use and cultural values are highest among people on Borneo who live close to remaining forest, and especially among older Christian residents, while support for forest clearing depended strongly on the scale at which deforestation occurs.
