Journal ArticleDOI
Impacts of a pesticide on pollinator species richness at different spatial scales
TL;DR: The results suggest that wild bees are an insect pollinator group at particular risk from pesticide use, and lower bumblebee and butterfly species richness was found in the more intensively farmed basin with higher pesticide loads.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dispersal capacity and diet breadth modify the response of wild bees to habitat loss
Riccardo Bommarco,Jacobus C. Biesmeijer,Birgit Meyer,Simon G. Potts,Juha Pöyry,Stuart P. M. Roberts,Ingolf Steffan-Dewenter,Erik Öckinger +7 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that habitat loss leads to clear shifts in the species composition of wild bee communities, and small specialists had similar or slightly lower z value compared with large specialists, andsmall generalists also tended to be more strongly affected by habitat loss as compared with small specialists.
Journal ArticleDOI
Insect pollination enhances seed yield, quality, and market value in oilseed rape
TL;DR: Seed quality was enhanced by insect pollination, rendering heavier seeds as well as higher oil and lower chlorophyll contents, clearly showing that Insect pollination is required to reach high seed yield and quality in oilseed rape.
Journal ArticleDOI
Agricultural intensification and biodiversity partitioning in European landscapes comparing plants, carabids, and birds
Andreas Flohre,Christina Fischer,Tsipe Aavik,Jan Bengtsson,Frank Berendse,Riccardo Bommarco,Piotr Ceryngier,Lars W. Clement,Christopher Dennis,Sönke Eggers,Mark C. Emmerson,Flavia Geiger,Irene Guerrero,Violetta Hawro,Pablo Inchausti,Jaan Liira,Manuel B. Morales,Juan J. Oñate,Tomas Pärt,Wolfgang W. Weisser,Camilla Winqvist,Carsten Thies,Teja Tscharntke +22 more
TL;DR: Local AI was closely correlated to beta diversity on larger scales up to the farm and region level, and thereby was an indicator of farm- and region-wide biodiversity losses, and in contrast to expectations, AI does not necessarily homogenize local communities, presumably due to the heterogeneity of farming practices.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mixed effects of organic farming and landscape complexity on farmland biodiversity and biological control potential across Europe
Camilla Winqvist,Jan Bengtsson,Tsipe Aavik,Frank Berendse,Lars W. Clement,Sönke Eggers,Christina Fischer,Andreas Flohre,Flavia Geiger,Jaan Liira,Tomas Pärt,Carsten Thies,Teja Tscharntke,Wolfgang W. Weisser,Riccardo Bommarco +14 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined how the species richness and abundance of wild plants, ground beetles and breeding birds, and the biological control potential of the area, were affected by organic and conventional farming, and how these effects were modified by landscape complexity.
